U-14 BNT Intrasquad Highlights – Oct. 15, 2014
The U.S. Under-14 Boys’ National Team recently convened for a domestic training camp from Oct. 11-19 at U.S. Soccer’s National Training Center in Carson, California.
As this was the first U-14 camp of a new cycle, it was an opportune moment for Youth National Team staff to see the extensive talent from the 48-player group through a variety of training and game settings. On Oct. 15, the U-14s held a pair of intrasquad games, the first of which included two 30-minute halves and the second game included two 35-minute halves.
Goal scoring highlights from the day:
In the opening match, Nomads forward Jacob Silva crossed the ball from the right, and after a deflection, Met Oval midfielder Veljko Petkovic unleashed a low, long-range shot just inside the right side of the frame.
Midfielder Oliver Larraz, who plays with the Colorado Rapids’ youth system, scored the game’s next two goals in a two-minute span. The first, Chivas USA Academy forward Ylysses Llanez set Larraz up with a cross from the right side of the box, and Larraz headed the ball into the goal. Shortly after, Philadelphia Union Academy midfielder Michael Pellegrino crossed the ball to the top of the box, where Larraz beat two defenders and shot to the far left post for his brace.
Met Oval forward Salvatore Rasizzi beat his defender and shot in the 51st minute, and the ball trickled into the net as the goalkeeper could not secure the shot. Six minutes later, BW Gottschee midfielder caused a turnover and combined with D.C. United Academy forward Kyle Davis and Weston FC’s Simon Vasquez near the top of the box. Davis utilized his ingenuity to dribble his way past a couple of defenders toward the penalty spot, where he shot past the goalkeeper for the game’s final tally.
In Game 2, forward Luis Arriaga created the first scoring sequence with a through ball from midfield to Weston FC forward Jose Rivas. From the right side of the box, Rivas shot from a difficult angle past the goalkeeper and inside the far left post.
Just one minute later, Ballistic United SC forward Travian Sousa dribbled down the left side and crossed to FC Dallas Academy defender Julian Hinojosa for the tally from the top of the six-yard box.
In the second half, forward Angel Ariza dribbled toward the end line and crossed to Chivas USA Academy midfielder Efrain Alvarez for the 36th-minute score. Later, Ariza got a score of his own, winning the ball in the box and beating his defender in the 47th minute.
The long-distance highlight of the day came from John Hilton in the closing minutes. Sockers midfielder Timothy Bielic built up the play with the dribble through the midfield and dished to Hilton on the right side. Hilton shot from more than 25 yards out, looping the ball over the goalkeeper and into the left side of the frame.
