CHICAGO (Jan. 23, 2015) – U.S. Paralympic National Team head coach Stuart Sharp has brought in 22 players for the squad’s first camp of 2015, running Jan. 25-Feb. 1 in Chula Vista, California.
“It is a privilege to gather the players together for the first camp of 2015, which will be an important year for the squad with both the World Cup and the Parapan American Games taking place in the summer,” Sharp said. “In addition to the Senior Squad, I have called in eight younger members of our roster to create a Future Squad, therefore to allow these players to experience the national team environment and hopefully help to smooth their transition to full international honors.”
The 22-player group is the largest during Sharp’s tenure with the Paralympic National Team and includes four new players: midfielders Mason Abbiate, Mike Bush, Alan Peña and Ryan Rodrigues.
“This camp, although we are missing a few key individuals, is the strongest we have managed to gather since I took over as head coach,” Sharp said. “The players have been fantastic over the past 12 months with them all being focused on continuous improvement, but we now need to step this up again and show this on the world stage in six months’ time.”
Before the focus turns toward the World Cup and Parapan American Games, the USA is scheduled to participate in the 2015 Football 7-a-Side Povoa Tournament in Povoa de Varzim, Portugal, in late March.
The U.S. Paralympic National Team is coming off a 2014 campaign that included a third-place performance at the Copa America in Canada and a runner-up finish at the 9th International 7-a-Side Football Tournament in Spain.
