With just a few weeks left in the European and Mexican seasons and MLS in full swing, the 40 players announced as part of the MNT’s preliminary player pool for Copa America Centenario on Sunday have just a few more chances to make a play for spots on the final tournament roster that will be announced later this month.
Here is a rundown of how MNT players performed for their clubs over the past week:
As he closes out his time on Merseyside, goalkeeper Tim Howard was granted the starting spot in goal for Everton’s final two home matches in recognition of his 10 years of service at Goodison Park. Howard’s swansong began this weekend, with the veteran MNT ‘keeper making one save in the Toffees’ 2-1 win vs. Bournemouth. Howard will play his final match for the club on May 15 vs. Norwich City before officially becoming a member of the Colorado Rapids in early July.
Earlier last week in Mexico, Ventura Alvarado was an unused substitute as Club America earned a 2-1 victory against Tigres UANL in the second leg of the CONCACAF Champions League Final. Alvarado played 90 minutes at right back in las Aguilas’ 2-0 first leg win on April 20, helping the club to its second straight regional crown.
On Saturday night, Alvarado was back in the lineup as he and Club America played to a 3-3 draw with Edgar Castillo and Monterrey at Estadio Azteca. Having missed los Rayados’ last three matches through injury, Castillo played the final 45 minutes for the Liga MX Clausura regular season champs.
In MLS, Jordan Morris scored in his third straight match for Seattle Sounders FC, tallying the 88th minute winner from close-range in Seattle Sounders FC’s 1-0 home win against Columbus Crew SC. Clint Dempsey went 78 minutes in Seattle’s winning effort while Ethan Finlay played the full 90 for Columbus.

Darlington Nagbe made a welcome return to the Portland Timbers midfield, two weeks after suffering a sprained ankle courtesy of harsh challenge from the LA Galaxy’s Nigel De Jong. Nagbe went 90 minutes and put the league back on notice as he assisted on Jack Barmby’s 64th minute goal in Portland’s 1-1 draw at New England on Wednesday.

Nagbe put in another full shift on Sunday as Timbers goalkeeper Jake Gleeson turned away a number of solid efforts from Jozy Altidore, Michael Bradley and Toronto FC in Portland’s 2-1 win over the Reds at Providence Park.
Having played the full 90 minutes in New England’s 1-1 draw with Portland on Wednesday, Lee Nguyen earned his first assist of the season on Saturday night, feeding Diego Fagundez in the seventh minute of the Revolution’s 2-2 draw with Orlando City SC.

To end the weekend, Graham Zusi, Matt Besler and Gyasi Zardes each recorded an assist as Sporting Kansas City played to a 1-1 home draw with the LA Galaxy Sunday night. Besler and Zusi each were credited with the helper that led to Brad Davis’ beautiful curling shot from the right to give KC a 1-0 lead in the 30th minute.

Not to be outdone, Zardes proved vital for a Galaxy side that was missing Robbie Keane and Steven Gerrard as he provided the final pass for Giovani dos Santos in a well-played counter attack to level the scoring in the 42nd minute. After Ashley Cole was shown two yellow cards in the span of a minute, the Galaxy hunkered down for the final 20 to earn a scrappy road point.
