With the European and Mexican leagues on summer break, MLS has center stage all to its own as MNT players keep up the effort to have a significant impact on their clubs.
Lee Nguyen scored a sure Goal of the Week candidate in the third minute of the New England Revolution’s 3-1 victory against Columbus Crew SC on Saturday night. The play started as Chris Tierney swerving ball from the left was headed directly to Nguyen by a Crew SC defender, before the Revs attacker chested down and unleashed a lethal right-footed half volley into the upper left corner.

Elsewhere on Saturday night, Gyasi Zardes provided the assist on Robbie Keane’s lone goal in the LA Galaxy’s 1-0 victory against Seattle Sounders FC on Saturday. Zardes’ fifth assist of the season came when he blew by his mark on the left and powered into the box before centering for Keane who buried his 100th goal across all competitions for the Galaxy in the 15th minute.

MNT teammates Jordan Morris and Clint Dempsey both had chance to equalize for Seattle. In the 53rd minute, Morris got on the end of a long ball over the top and after a collision with Galaxy ‘keeper Brian Rowe, saw his attempt cleared off the line by A.J. DeLaGarza. Then in the 82nd minute, Tyrone Mears cross from the right was headed back across goal by Morris before Dempsey’s outside of the foot attempt glanced off the lower left post.
The curtain raiser to the Liga MX Apertura took place on Sunday in the Campeón de Campeones match. In a game played between last season’s two league champions, Omar Gonzalez went 90 minutes and received a yellow card in Pachuca’s 1-0 defeat to 2015 Apertura champions Tigres UANL at StubHub Center in Carson, Calif.
The Liga MX Apertura kicks off Friday night when Michael Orozco, Paul Arriola and Club Tijuana host Monarcas Morelia.
