U.S. Beach Soccer National Team Opens 2016 Intercontinental Cup with Losses to Iran, Russia

DUBAI (Nov. 2, 2016) – The U.S. Beach Soccer National Team fell 6-2 and 9-3 to Iran and Russia, respectively, in their first two matches of the 2016 Beach Soccer Intercontinental Cup.

Nick Perera started off the first match with a bang, putting the USA on the board very early in the first period. However, Iran responded with three goals of their own within the next few minutes. Perera struck again with his second goal of the night, cutting down Iran’s lead to just one goal at the end of the first period.

The USA carried the momentum into the second period, nulling Iran’s attack but were unable to find the back of the net. Mohammad Ahmadzadeh then put Iran in command when he scored with nine seconds left in the second period. Iran notched two more tallies in the final period, cementing the final 6-2 scoreline.

The USA’s second matchup of the tournament kicked off very similarly to the first. The U.S. faced the Intercontinental Cup defending champions Russia, but Alessandro Canale came charging out of the gates, scoring the opening goal of the match. Russia replied with two goals of their own, but Perera leveled the score with a brilliant overhead kick goal that scorched the upper-left corner of Russia’s net.

The match resumed in the second period even at 2-2, but it was all Russia from then on who managed to find the back of the net five times in the second period and twice in the third. Canale scored once again for the USA with one minute left in the game, finalizing a 9-3 victory for Russia.

The USA will face Egypt on Nov. 3 in their third match of the 2016 Beach Soccer Intercontinental Cup.
