U.S. Beach National Team Wraps Up Intercontinental Cup with Losses vs. Poland, UAE

DUBAI (Nov. 6, 2016) – The U.S. Beach Soccer National Team wrapped up the 2016 Intercontinental Cup in Dubai with 6-3 and 4-3 losses to Poland and United Arab Emirates, respectively.

The fifth place match against Poland on Nov. 4 started off even on all fronts, with the first period ending 0-0 and each team scoring two goals in the second. Ryan Futagaki and Lewie Valentine netted the two U.S. goals to keep the score tied at the end of the second period. However, Poland took off in the third frame, scoring four goals to secure a 6-2 lead. The USA’s Andrew Feld cut the lead to 6-3 with 26 seconds left in the match, but it wasn’t enough to overturn the final result.

The USA went on to play the 7th place match against the host, United Arab Emirates, on Nov. 5. The UAE took a 1-0 lead in the first frame, but Alessandro Canale and Oscar Gil flipped that lead to 2-1 in favor of the USA in the second period. The UAE then responded with three goals of their own in the third. Alessandro Canale scored his second of the night with 5:37 minutes left in the game, bringing the score to 4-3 for the UAE. After a hard-fought back and forth match, the USA was not able to tip the score in their favor, thus taking 8th place in the 2016 Beach Soccer Intercontinental Cup.

Next on the schedule for the U.S. Beach Soccer National Team is a domestic training camp from Dec. 18-22 in Huntington Beach, Calif. to wrap up its 2016 programming.
