The tail end of English football’s holiday schedule led into a full slate of FA Cup action, meanwhile across the Atlantic, the Liga MX Clausura season kicked off this weekend. U.S. MNT players were involved in all the action.
Celebrating the new year, goalkeeper Brad Guzan made his first start for Middlesbrough since Aug. 30, making four saves as the club held defending Premier League champions, Leicester City to a 0-0 Premier League draw at the Riverside on Jan. 2. Switching to FA Cup action on Sunday, Guzan was again between the sticks and made three more saves as 10-man ‘Boro earned a 3-0 victory against Sheffield Wednesday to advance to the Fourth Round of the FA Cup.
Joining them in the Fourth Round will be Tottenham Hotspur, which handed prospective U.S. MNT center back Cameron Carter-Vickers his FA Cup debut in a 2-0 win against Aston Villa. The sturdy 19-year-old was involved at both ends of the field, putting in a solid defensive shift while causing danger on Spurs’ set pieces and will hope the performance leads to a league debut this season.
Kicking off the Liga MX Clausura, Edgar Castillo returned from a lengthy injure absence and got his first action since July 30 in Monterrey’s 3-2 win against Puebla on Sunday. Now recovered from a broken kneecap suffered just three matches in to the Apertura last season, Castillo played 59 minutes and picked up a yellow card in the victory.
Elsewhere in Mexico, Omar Gonzalez and Pachuca opened up well, earning a 4-2 victory against William Yarbrough and Club Leon. A trio of Americans were also in action for Club Tijuana at Morelia on Saturday night, as Paul Arriola gained his first start of the 2016-17 Liga MX campaign along with MNT teammate Michael Orozco. Joe Corona also announced his return from a season-long loan at Dorados Sinaloa, entering in the 58th minute of los Xolos 2-0 loss.
Though the German Bundesliga is in the midst of its short winter break, clubs are back preparing for the league’s restart later this month. Spending some of their layoff in Cadiz, Spain, Christian Pulisic and Borussia Dortmund collected a 4-1 friendly win against PSV Eindhoven on Saturday, with the MNT midfielder capping the scoring when he poked home a feed from André Schürrle in the 74th minute.
Finally, central midfielder Emerson Hyndman is moving north, at least temporarily. The 20-year-old joined English Premier League side Bournemouth from Fulham over the summer, but an injury in preseason limited his chances through the first half of the season. Just after playing 56 minutes in the Cherries 3-0 FA Cup defeat to Millwall on Saturday, it was confirmed that Hyndman would be headed to Scottish Premier League giants Rangers on loan through the end of the season.
