Van Den Bergh Calls 24 Players to Chula Vista Training Center for U-15 BNT Camp
CHICAGO (March 3, 2017) – U.S. Under-17 Boys’ National Team head coach Dave van den Bergh has named a 24-player roster for the team’s latest domestic camp, set to take place from March 4-11, in California at the Chula Vista Elite Athlete Training Center, formerly known as the Chula Vista Olympic Training Center.
“I’m looking forward to seeing how much the boys have progressed in their own environments over the last couple months,” van den Bergh said. “We’ll be continuing the evaluation process of the players we have to expand the pool of players and make it deeper. This will be the last camp we have before we go internationally to Italy and so this will be the last opportunity for the players to establish themselves to be in that group.”
The camp will aid in the USA’s preparation for the Torneo delle Nazioni 2017, the world youth football showcase tournament set to take place April 25-May 1 in Gradisca, Italy. The U.S have been drawn with Slovenia, Russia and England. This year marks the fourteenth edition of the event and will be the fourth time in the last five years that a U.S. U-15 BNT will participate. The 2013, 2014 and 2015 U-15 player pools also participated in the event.
This will be the U-15 BNT’s second domestic camp of 2017. Similar to January’s domestic camp, the squad will play one match against Club Tijuana Xolos’ U-17 team on Tuesday, March 7, at 6:00pm EST. An intra-squad scrimmage will also take place on Friday, March 10, at 6:00pm EST.
All 24 of the players brought into camp by Van den Bergh currently play in the U.S. Soccer Development Academy. Out of the group of players, forward Alfonso Ocampo Chavez has spent the most time in the Development Academy, training with Merced Atlas Soccer Academy for three seasons before moving to his current club, Seattle Sounders FC Academy.
Every player in this camp was born in 2002. The age cut-off for this U-15 player pool is players born on or after Jan. 1, 2002.
