U-18 WNT Falls to Canada U-20 WNT 4-1 in Australia

CANBERRA, Australia (July 6, 2017) – The U.S. Under-18 Women’s National Team fell to the Canada Under-20 WNT 4-1 in the first of three matches during a training camp in Australia’s capital city. The USA will also face the Australia U-20 WNT on July 10 and July 12.

Canada scored twice in each half, the first on a penalty kick from Sarah Stratigakis in the fifth minute and the last on a direct free kick from Julia Grosso in the 81st.

The lone U.S. score came off a direct free kick from Emina Ekic, who bent her shot around the wall and into the upper left corner in second half stoppage time.

The USA out-shot Canada 13-12 and had more corner kicks, but the Canadians had more shots on goal and were the more efficient finishers on the day.

This group of U.S. players is in the middle of the first year of a two-year cycle as U-18s before transitioning to U-20s in 2019, and will form the core of the group that will eventually attempt to qualify for the 2020 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup.
