RECAP: U.S. PNT Defeats Australia 6-0 in Opening Match of 2017 World Championships

DeLillo Scores First Half Brace, Ballou and Jahn Add Goals

SAN LUIS, Argentina (Sept. 11, 2017) – The United States Paralympic National Team opened the 2017 IFCPF CP Football World Championships with a 6-0 rout of Australia in San Luis, Argentina. PNT newcomer Cameron DeLillo scored a brace in the first half, while PNT veterans Seth Jahn and Adam Ballou, the team's 2016 Paralympic leading scorers, also scored.

The U.S. was on the attack early, creating scoring opportunities from the starting whistle. The team earned two corner kicks in the first five minutes, with Jahn finding a rebound off the second corner and putting it into the net to open up the USA's account.

The U.S. didn’t let off the gas after the first score. An attempted cross from DeLillo rebounded off of Australian defender Ben Atkins and found its way past goalkeeper Chris Barty for an own goal in the seventh minute. Just two minutes later, a beautiful ball from Ballou led to a shot and a flurry of rebounds that DeLillo knocked in for a goal of his own to give the USA a 3-0 lead.

The U.S. continued to dictate the match after the early barrage of goals. Handling a few Australia counterattacks, the PNT patiently set-up its offense, testing the defense with several deep passes. Working off a Jahn throw-in, a long shot from Kevin Hensley hit the crossbar and DeLillo was there for the rebound, putting it in for a hat trick on the day. Just before the end of the half, a long ball from David Garza found Jahn by the right post. He dished to Ballou in front of the net for a brilliant first-time goal.

After the half, defender Ben Lindau, another PNT newcomer, made his international tournament debut, coming on for Jahn. The defensive-minded substitution queued up a more conservative half for the U.S. as it worked to maintain its lead. Late in the half, Lindau hit a cross along the end-line to find Ballou for another one-time tap-in and the final 6-0 scoreline.

Next, the U.S. will face Northern Ireland on Wednesday, Sept. 13 at 3 p.m. ET (YouTube). Northern Ireland fell 5-0 to Ukraine earlier on Monday. The team is a familiar foe for U.S. PNT head coach Stuart Sharp, who coached the Scottish PNT from 2005-2011.
