Real Salt Lake used Aaron Maund’s 87th minute header to down the LA Galaxy in the opening 2015 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Quarterfinal on Tuesday night, booking a place in the Semifinal for the second time in three years.

The home side wasted no time looking for the first goal as Sebastian Jaime broke in on the right and blasted a heavy effort that Galaxy ‘keeper Brian Rowe parried out for a corner kick in the sixth minute.

The Galaxy forged two near chances of their own in the first half. In the 21st minute, Robbie Keane found enough space to get off a powerful effort from 25 yards out that RSL goalkeeper Jeff Attinella tipped over the bar. Eight minutes later, Juninho’s cross from the right picked out Sebastian Lletget whose first-time effort was pushed out for another Galaxy corner kick.

After sustaining Galaxy pressure through the middle of the first half, RSL nearly took the lead through an own goal in the 42nd minute. Tony Beltran’s driven ball from the right threaded into the area before deflecting off Galaxy defender Leonardo, coming within inches of the near post.

Two-time FA Cup winner Steven Gerrard made his competitive debut for the Galaxy, replacing Ignacio Maganto at halftime. The former England international made an almost immediate impact when he found himself in alone on Attinella, but the RSL ‘keeper made a huge one-on-one stop to keep it level in the 54th minute.

RSL nearly grabbed the winner in the 81st minute. Beltran juked his defender just outside the box before cutting back for Morales. The Argentine attacker took his space, driving towards the end line before throttling his shot towards the near post where Rowe parried it out for a corner kick.

The hosts came good in the 87th minute when Luke Mulholland’s cross from the right picked out Aaron Maund, who headed back across goal into the net to push Real Salt Lake to its second U.S. Open Cup Semifinal appearance in three years.

With the win, Real Salt Lake will travel to face the winner of the Houston Dynamo vs. Sporting Kansas City Quarterfinal, which will be played on Tuesday, July 21 at Sporting Park in Kansas City, Kansas.

Also in U.S. Open Cup Quarterfinal play, the New York Red Bulls host the Philadelphia Union at Red Bull Arena on June 21, and the Chicago Fire Welcome Orlando City S.C. to Toyota Park on June 22.
