New York Red Bulls (MLS) 4, New York Cosmos (NASL) 1 - (EAST)
In yet another New York Derby, it took the Red Bulls little time to find the back of the net when Lloyd Sam’s quick cross from the right picked out Sal Zizzo, who nodded across the goal line in the fifth minute. The Cosmos responded quickly as a deflected pass put Lucky Mkosana into the box alone before the Zimbabwean striker buried his effort past Luis Robles in the 16th minute. The Red Bulls would restore the lead just before halftime as U.S. international Sacha Kljestan’s corner picked out the head of Anatole Abang who nodded home in the 42nd minute.

The Cosmos inserted Spanish forward Raul to start the second half, but it was the Red Bulls that found two more goals. After Chris Duvall was hauled down in the box, Kljestan buried his penalty to make it 3-1 in the 52nd minute. Second half substitute Mike Grella made it 4-1 on a fantastic individual effort to ice the match just before full-time. The win pushes the Red Bulls to the club’s eighth Quarterfinal appearance where they’ll meet the Philadelphia Union.
