San Jose Earthquakes (MLS) 0, LA Galaxy (MLS) 1 - (WEST)
With the teams meeting just four days after a hotly contested league encounter, the visiting LA Galaxy took no time to silence the Avaya Stadium crowd. Defender Kenney Walker sent a pinpoint long ball for the streaking Jose Villareal who brought the ball down with his right foot before burying with his left to give the Galaxy a 1-0 lead in the fifth minute. The Quakes looked to have found the equalizer in the 30th minute when Mark Sherrod rose above his marker to head past Brian Rowe, but the San Jose forward was whistled for offside.

San Jose continued to look for the equalizer in the second half. In the 58th minute, Leandro Barrera’s looping service just missed the head of Sherrod at the back post. Ten minutes later, Cordell Cato displayed fancy work on the right before his cross found a streaking Barrera, who put his first-time effort just wide of goal. The Quakes nearly got victimized by a familiar foe when Alan Gordon’s header at the right post was well saved by Brian Meredith in the 82nd minute. With the Quakes unable to find an equalizer, the Galaxy closed out the 1-0 victory, becoming the only road team to earn a win in the Round of 16 and setting up a Quarterfinal visit to Real Salt Lake.
