Myrtle Beach Mutiny (NPSL) 2, Charlotte Eagles (PDL) 3 (a.e.t.)
Making their 13th appearance in the U.S. Open Cup, the Charlotte Eagles went up 2-0 after halftime thanks to a pair of well-worked goals by Dani Siaj in the 49th and 59th minutes. The two goals only invigorated Myrtle Beach who began their comeback when Ryan Arambula pulled a goal back for the South Carolina side in the 68th minute. Just as it looked like Charlotte would pull out a 2-1 victory, the Mutiny’s Jon Ander Ibarrondo desperation strike in second half stoppage time forced an extra 30 minutes. Playing with 10 men in extra time, the Eagles defied the odds when they earned a penalty kick, which Marco Micaletto buried inside the left post to give the side a 3-2 extra time victory. The win sets up a Queen City clash in the Second Round as the Eagles host the Charlotte Independence on Wednesday, May 18.
