Minnesota United FC (NASL) 1, Sporting Kansas City (MLS) 2
Sporting Kansas City began their defense of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on the road against Minnesota United. One hundred and twenty minutes later, the champs were still standing - bruised but heading back to Kansas with a 2-1 win. Christian Ramirez’ penalty kick for the hosts canceled out Benny Feilhaber’s opener from the spot and the teams traded chances without finding a winner in regulation. In the second period of extra time Feilhaber set up Diego Rubio for the latter’s first goal in the competition and it was enough to ensure Vermes’ side were able to see out the victory and head back to the Round of 16.
