Miami FC (NASL) 3, South Florida Surf (PDL) 2
Two ties and two lead changes highlighted this wild affair between clubs separated by just 90 miles of coast line. The Surf jumped out to an early 1-0 advantage on Honduras U-20 international Darwin Espinal’s 20th minute goal. Trailing at the half, Miami responded three minutes after the break when Kwadwo Poku headed home the equalizer off a Blake Smith cross. The momentum carried the home side to a second goal 12 minutes later as halftime substitute Dylan Mares played in a cross that ended in an own goal. South Florida leveled things in the 74th on a Jeff Michaud strike, but Miami buried the game-winner five minutes later via a Jaime Chávez header. Alessandro Nesta’s squad now advances to take on the Tampa Bay Rowdies in the Third Round.
