Brooklyn Italians (N.Y.) 3, New York Cosmos B (NPSL) 2
For a second year running, the New York Cosmos were sent packing from the Open Cup early. This time it was their B team (of the National Premier Soccer League -NPSL) that fell victim to the Brooklyn Italians at their home ground of LIU. The 3-2 game was a scorcher from the start with the two time Open Cup champion Italians (1979 & 1991) taking a lead early and well against the run of play. A long ball from the back picked out Giuseppe Barone, who coolly flicked the ball home over the onrushing Cosmos keeper. But seven minutes before the half, the Cosmos got the equalizer their good play warranted when Bledi Bardic connected with another long ball and rounded the Italians goalkeeper to make it 1-1 heading into the half.

The second-half was a barnburner with the Italians taking the lead twice more, both times through Rasmus Hansen. The NEC Player of the Year and LIU Blackbird, playing on his own home field, collected a through-ball in the 58th minute to put the Italians up, only to see the lead snuffed out when Wojtek Wojcik scored seconds after the restart from close range to make it 2-2. With five minutes to go, Hansen had his final say when he cut in from the right and hammered home with his left foot to put the Brooklyn Italians through to the First Round on Wednesday against National Amateur Cup holders Lansdowne Bhoys out of Yonkers, N.Y.

  • The 2018 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup is the first time the New York Cosmos, a legendary name in American soccer, will compete as a member as the National Premier Soccer League (NPSL).
