FC Denver vs. Azteca FC

MAY 9 | 7:15 p.m. MT | North Stadium; Westminster, Colo.

FC Denver (Colo.) 4, Azteca FC (Colo.) 2
Open Cup debutants FC Denver hosted Azteca FC in a Mile High matchup of Colorado Premier League foes. The hosts, possibly the lone 2018 Open Cup club to have begun on Craglist, jumped out to a 3-0 lead behind goals from Cesar Castillo in the 29th and 54th minutes, sandwiching an Alex Bernhardt header off a pinpoint 45-yard set piece in the 37th. Jesus Muñoz got a goal back for the visitors in the 58th minute when he cleaned up a loose ball inside the penalty area. A scary aerial collision in the 74th minute saw FC Denver's Kyle Heppenstall carted off the field after a long stoppage. Azteca cut the lead to one as Roberto Aguilera headed a deflected shot into the open net seven minutes into injury time. But Castillo bagged his hat trick on a quick Denver counter eight minutes later and the referee's whistle blew for full time to close out a 4-2 FC Denver victory. FC Denver plays away to Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC in the Second Round.
