Charleston Battery (USL) 1, South Georgia Tormenta FC (PDL) 0
The Charleston Battery held off a tenacious effort from PDL side South Georgia Tormenta FC to win 1-0 and secure its place in the Third Round of the U.S. Open Cup. Last week, Tormenta used a late rally to stay alive in the tournament but the Battery’s lone first half goal proved too great a deficit to overcome. Charleston dictated the tempo in the early-going. After a spell of patient build-up midway through the half, Nico Rittmeyer made a run from the right wing to the center of the field before dishing wide to Victor Mansaray. He chipped it up above the six yard line, where Patrick Okonkwo headed it to the near post for the game’s lone score. The Battery advance to face reigning NPSL champion Elm City Express on May 23.
