Sporting AZ FC (Ariz.) 1, Phoenix Rising FC (USL) 1 (5-4 PKs)
The Battle for Arizona came down to a shootout, with Sporting AZ FC of the United Premier Soccer League (UPSL) pulling a harrowing upset on Didier Drogba’s Phoenix Rising FC at Chandler-Gilbert Community College in Chandler, Ariz. Captain Chris Cortez netted Rising FC’s first goal with a left-footed blast in the 64th minute, but Sporting AZ FC’s Danny Arrubia found the equalizer in the 67th as the teams finished regulation locked at one goal apiece. Sporting AZ had an opportunity to seal the victory several times, and it took a double save by goalkeeper Andrew Weber in the sixth round of penalty kicks to set the table for Eijin Kishimoto to send the crowd into frenzy with a game-winning spot kick. Sporting AZ will host a second straight USL squad, Fresno FC in the Third Round on May 23.
