U-20 WNT Defeats Papua New Guinea 10-0 to Complete Pre-World Cup Test Run

PORT MORESBY, Papua New Guinea (May 30, 2016) – The U.S. Under-20 Women’s National Team defeated Papua New Guinea 10-0 in the second of two matches on a trip to get an early look at the environment, facilities and culture they will experience at the end of the year when PNG hosts the 2016 U-20 Women’s World Cup from Nov. 13-Dec. 3.

The match was played at Sir John Guise Stadium, which will host 10 matches at the U-20 Women’s World Cup, including two quarterfinals and both semifinals. All 32 matches of the World Cup will be staged over four venues in Port Moresby. This will be the eighth FIFA Women’s World Cup for this age level, with the first two being held as U-19 events.

The USA scored three times in the first half and another seven goals in the second, and of the first six two each were scored by Kelcie Hedge and midfielder Marley Carnales with Emily Fox and Ashley Sanchez tallying the other two over the first 78 minutes. Kaleigh Riehl, Savannah DeMelo, Ally Watt and Fox all scored in the final 10 minutes plus stoppage time to hit double-figures.

The 2016 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup will feature 16 nations divided into four groups of four teams. The top two finishers in each group will advance to the quarterfinals stage to be held on Thursday, Nov. 24 and Friday, Nov. 25. The winners of those games will advance to the semifinals on Tuesday, Nov. 29. The championship and third-place matches are set for Saturday, Dec. 3.

In first round play, the USA will face France, New Zealand and Ghana in Group C. The U.S. opens the tournament on Monday, Nov. 14 against France at 4 p.m. local time, faces New Zealand on Thursday, Nov. 17 at 7 p.m., and finishes the group against Ghana on Monday, Nov. 21 at 4 p.m.
