CARSON, Calif. (July 11) — An early strike by Vardar’s Peter Jacobson was canceled out late in the game by Real So Cal’s penalty shot leaving both teams with 1 point after a 1-1 draw. Moises Orozco converted for the local side after heavy pressure forced a handball by Vardar’s Joseph Dillon.
Vardar opened their first-ever Finals Week against the only home team here this year, whose fans numbered just under 100 along the sidelines. Both teams started fast with quick passing, but neither club was able to gain much in the way of possession.
The first break in the game came through a defensive lapse by Real So Cal in the 19th minute. Vardar earned a free kick approximately 30 yards from goal along the left side, and looked merely to drop a cross into the mix. Caleb Stanko’s lofted ball was reached and flicked on by Peter Jacobson, as Real So Cal goalkeeper Keon Parsa was unable to reach the cross in time.
Real responded in the 31st minute, building from the back to send a ball to Tanner Snedigar stationed over on the left side near midfield. Seeing a runner, Snedigar sent a diagonal ball into the box where a streaking Edwin Rivas made contact but forced his header wide to the right.
Keeping up the pressure, Real earned another free kick from 35 yards along the right sideline. After the initial cross was cleared out, the ball fell to Fabian Garcia at the top of the box. His hard blast beat the keeper but came off the bottom of the crossbar and stayed out of the goal, leaving the local side empty handed yet again.
The second half brought a change of strategy from Vardar, as the Michican side looked to protect their slim lead. Sitting behind the ball, Real got to work looking to break their bunker and earn the equalizer. Using the sidelines to pass the ball around and send in crosses, Real earned a succession of corner kicks midway through the half that Vardar cleared valiantly. With just over seven minutes left in the game however, Real got their chance.
Running to collect a high ball in the box, Vardar defender Joseph Dillon misjudged the bounce or lost the ball in the sun. In either case, his arm trapped the ball instead of his chest and Real was given a penalty kick. Moises Orozco stepped up to take the shot and gave Vardar goalkeeper Jonathan Jebson no chance with a hard shot off the inside of the right post and in.
Suddenly forced to attack more, Vardar had one more late chance in the 87th minute. Countering after a Real attack, Caleb Stanko took the ball up the left side before passing it to Blake Skamiera. Seeing Ezekiel Harris splitting the defense, Skamiera sent a well-weighted through ball that Harris latched onto. Holding off his defender, the striker shot towards the right post from the top of the box but Real So Cal goalkeeper Benjamin Gold got down and held the shot to keep the match tied at 1 apiece.
