(L to R): The Group B coaches, Japan's Norio Sasaki, Denmark asst. Danny Jung, Norway head coach Eli Landsem and Pia
Representatives from all 12 teams participating in the Algarve Cup attended a press conference today, and as usual, not much of interest was said. (Coaches never seem to say much around other coaches, right? Especially when they are about to play them in a big tournament).
Of course, that changed after the formal part of the media mixer when U.S. head coach Pia Sundhage gave her own mini-press conference to the large contingent of Japanese media who seemed to hang on her every word. We knew Pia was popular in Sweden and the USA, but we guess she's huge in Japan now too.
Pia chats with the Japanese media contingent...and the teams don't even meet until the third match of group B play
It's no stretch to say that this was the most well-attended pre-Algarve Cup press conference ever (they've only done a big press conference a few times, and only in the past few years has it been a consistent occurence) as the room was packed (in no small part due to the Japanese media).
But one could still feel the World Cup buzz in the air and with the Olympics on the horizon, exciting times are ahead.
