The U.S. U-20 MNT played an intrasquad scrimmage in front of coaches and scouts from every MLS club, a slew of media and some fans at the Central Broward Regional Park – the same field as the MLS combine games.
Before the game, head coach Thomas Rongen addressed the group of spectators to talk about the state of his team and some of his players, specifically those entering Thursday’s SuperDraft.
Those in attendance were treated to an impressive display, with the game being played at a high pace – especially for an intrasquad. The U.S. players were split into two teams – White and Gray – and played two action-packed 45 minute halves.
The first half saw both teams earn numerous opportunities, but the lone goal from the first stanza was scored by the White team’s Conor Doyle. UCLA midfielder Kelyn Rowe fired a shot from just outside the penalty area that Cody Cropper did well to save. But Doyle, who plays for Derby County in England, read the rebound well, and fired it home from a difficult angle.
At halftime, there were a number of position changes. Perry Kitchen moved from central defender to holding midfielder; Ibeagha from central defender to left fullback; Zarek Valentin from right back to central defender and Korey Veeder to full back from holding midfielder, just to name a few. There were also a handful of players who changed teams.
With Bobby Wood moving over to the White team, he took advantage of some fast attacking plays. The 1860 Munich striker twice found the back of the net after winger Joe Gyau used his speed and technical ability to get down his right flank.
Wood’s first goal came when he finished a rebound from a Gyau shot that clanked off the post and nearly crossed the line. He then received a slotted ball, turned and fired a shot that hit off the post and went in.
We’ll have photos from the game available … in the mean time, here are the lineups for both squads:
