When doing research on U.S. midfielder Jeff Larentowicz, we kept coming across the nickname 'Ginger Ninja" written in stories here in the United States. It even followed him abroad when he went to train with Bolton.
So where did the comic-book, action-hero type nickname come from?
"Back in 2007, I scored a goal against the Chicago Fire," Larentowicz recounted. "A corner came in from the right side, and I just kind of jumped with my legs straight out. It wasn't quite a volley - I guess it looked like a karate kick and I hit the ball off the bottom of my foot. Next thing I know, the fans are calling me the 'Ginger Ninja'."
Some nicknames stick. Some nicknames drive players nuts (ask DaMarcus Beasley about being called 'Jitterbug'). Where does this one fit in for Jeff?
"Believe me, I've had a lot of nicknames in my day. As they go, this one's pretty cool."
For the record, we think so too.
Watch the highlights of Jeff's goal below. The third angle really does it justice.
