The Olympic Gold medal match wasn't the only drama for U.S. Soccer on Thursday ...
While the WNT was winning gold in London, Terrence Boyd and Rapid Vienna were on the continent and facing a 2-1 deficit heading into the second leg of third round qualifying for the Europa League. The game was level at 0-0 heading into the 90th minute, which would have meant elimination for Rapid Vienna. Boyd earned a penalty that was converted and tied the series on aggregate, then in the eight minute of stoppage time he buried a chance to secure his side's place in the Europa League Playoffs, where they will face PAOK FC from Greece.
It was an easier ride for Steve Cherundolo and Hannover, who cruised to a 2-0 home win against St. Patrick's of Ireland to advance to face WKS Slask Wroclaw.
Jozy Altidore and Oguchi Onyewu also enter the tournament at this stage, which will take place over two legs on Aug. 23 and Aug. 30. AZ Alkmaar has been drawn with FC Anzhi Makhachkala from Russia, who boast Samuel Eto'o on their strikeforce. Meantime, Sporting will face AC Horsens of Denmark.
