Jose Villarreal, who was the U.S. Under-20 Men’s National Team’s leading scorer during the 2013 CONCACAF U-20 Championship runner-up showing in Puebla, Mexico, and won a title with Pateadores in the U.S. Soccer Development Academy in 2011, scored a stoppage-time equalizer for the LA Galaxy to earn a 2-2 draw at Toronto FC on Saturday.
Villarreal’s strike, a left-footed scissor kick after Toronto’s defense could not clear the ball out of the box, also was No. 1 on ESPN SportsCenter’s top plays of the day.
His efforts helped the defending MLS champion Galaxy maintain its unbeaten season at 2-0-2.
Former Andromeda Academy player Dillon Powers, the No. 11 overall pick in the 2013 MLS SuperDraft out of Notre Dame, scored his first MLS goal from 20 yards out to give the Colorado Rapids a 1-0 lead in the team’s eventual 2-2 draw against the Portland Timbers.
Also in that game, defender Shane O’Neill, a regular starter at center back for the U-20 MNT and a former Rapids Academy player, made his first career MLS start.
Former St. Louis Scott Gallagher Missouri product Will Bruin scored a 17th-minute goal that turned out to be the game-winner as the Houston Dynamo blanked the San Jose Earthquakes 2-0.
