CHICAGO (Sept 11, 2013) – The U.S. Under-17 Women’s National Team will conduct its second-to-last training camp before the CONCACAF Women’s World Cup Qualifying Tournament when the team travels to Lakeland Ranch, Fla. for an event from Sept. 15-22.
U.S. head coach B.J. Snow has called up 26 players, with 18 born 1997, six born 1998 with two in 1999. Players born on or after Jan. 1, 1997, are age-eligible for the next FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup to be held in Costa Rica.
The U.S. team is prepping for the 2013 CONCACAF Women’s Under-17 Championship which will be held from Oct. 30-Nov. 9 in Jamaica. The USA is the defending champion of the competition, having defeated Canada 1-0 in the final in Guatemala during the last cycle.
The tournament will feature the USA, Canada, Mexico, host Jamaica, Central American qualifiers El Salvador and Guatemala, and two more Caribbean nations to be determined. The draw for the tournament will be held in early October.
The qualifying competition will follow the same format as in past years, with two-four team groups producing two semifinalists each. There will be no margin for error for any of the teams as only the two finalists will qualify for the U-17 Women’s World Cup, joining CONCACAF member and host Costa Rica.
Forwards Mallory Pugh (eight goals in all competitions) and Madison Haley (four goals) lead the USA in scoring this year. The Americans have compiled a record of 4-1-2 in international matches this year. The U.S. team will play one intra-squad scrimmage during the camp, on Friday, September 20 at 7 p.m.
