USA representative Weston FC’s U-13/14 Development Academy team opened Group B play of the 2014 Manchester United Premier Cup with a victory and loss on Wednesday.
Weston’s Christian Koat scored both goals during a 2-0 victory against Thailand’s AC Thonburi. Earlier in the day, Weston held a halftime lead but dropped a 3-2 match to Hertha BSC Berlin of Germany. Nico Garcia-Murillo and Koat each had first-half goals.
Though Weston is in third place in Group B after Day 1, the Florida-based side is still very much in good shape to advance to the tournament’s knockout-round stage. Hertha BSC Berlin and Spain’s Valencia CF are tied atop the group with four points apiece, followed by Weston FC and Korea’s Joongdong Middle School FC (3 points each) and AC Thonburi (0 points).
The top two teams of each group advance to the knockout stage. Weston faces Valencia and Joondong on Thursday.
