The U-18 teams wrapped up their third and final matches at the 2014 Development Academy Winter Showcase on Tuesday, Dec. 2, at the Premier Sports Campus in Lakewood Ranch, Florida.
Here were some of the standout moments from the day:
Shattuck-Saint Mary’s defeated the Montreal Impact 3-1, handing Montreal its first loss of the season. Jacob Scheper, Luke Haakenson and Kalim Amokachi each scored a goal to lead the Mid-America Division-leading Shattuck, which moves to 6-1-6 on the season. The Impact holds a significant first-place lead in the Northeast Division at 10-1-2. Heading into the game, Montreal had allowed only four goals in its previous 12 matches. The Impact was the last remaining unbeaten team in the Academy’s U-18 age division.
Real Salt Lake AZ’s Edgar Duran came up big with an 89th-minute goal to lead his side to a 1-0 victory against Capital Area RailHawks Academy – CASL. Duran now has 10 goals in 15 games as RSL’s roster includes three players with double-digit goals this season. Real Salt Lake leads the Southwest Division at 11-1-3. Though CASL saw its 11-game unbeaten streak (9-0-2) come to a close, it still is in second place in the Southeast Division at 10-4-3.
Elsewhere, D.C. United’s offense erupted for six goals, all in the second half, for a wild 6-3 victory against the Indiana Fire Academy. Lucas Mendes scored three goals, while Gerson Umana, Antonio Bustamante and Jean-Christophe Koffi added a goal apiece. Indiana Fire Academy had the upper hand with a 2-0 lead through the 54th minute.
At the daily #SkillCage, the New England Revolution’s Andrew Barrowman and PA Classics’ Matthew Baquero tied for first place with 24 points in the “Showtime” challenge. The #SkillCage features two goals and a competitive setup for the Academy players to test their skills, with a new competition taking place every day throughout the Academy Winter Showcase.
