SAN SALVADOR, El Salvador (Jan. 27, 2015) – The U.S. Beach Soccer National Team will face the Bahamas, Barbados and Antigua and Barbuda in Group C at the 2015 CONCACAF Beach Soccer Championship, from March 28-April 4 in El Salvador. The Official Draw took place today at the Intercontinental Real San Salvador Hotel.
The U.S. will open Group C play against Antigua and Barbuda on March 28, face Barbados on March 30, and the Bahamas on March 31 to wrap up group matches.
"We are eager and looking forward to defend our championship," said U.S. Beach Soccer National Team head coach Eddie Soto. "These next few weeks are key for us in preparing for the tournament. Although we are familiar with Bahamas and Barbados, Antigua is a bit of an unknown. With 16 nations fighting for two World Cup spots this will be the most difficult qualification yet. CONCACAF and the LOC in El Salvador have worked hard to host a first-class event."
A record of 16 participating nations were separated into four groups of four, all of which will engage in round-robin play over the tournament’s first four match days, with the top two teams from each group advancing to the next round. All eight teams will then play on the remaining match dates. Quarterfinals will then take place on April 2, semifinals on April 3 and finals on April 4.
The two finalists will then compete for the regional crown and also automatically qualify for the 2015 FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup in Portugal, July 9-19.
The defending CONCACAF champions, the USA has won the event twice, once in 2006 and most recently in 2013. Its latest title came after an undefeated championship run that culminated with a 5-4 victory over El Salvador in the tournament final. Alongside Mexico, the USA is the only other nation in the Confederation with two titles in the event.
Group A will consist of El Salvador, Jamaica, Puerto Rico and Belize. Group B is made up of Mexico, Trinidad & Tobago, Guadeloupe and Turks and Caicos. Group D is headed by Costa Rica, Guatemala, Panama and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
All tournament matches will be held at Estadio de Futbol de Playa Costa del Sol in San Salvador, capital city of El Salvador. The complete tournament schedule will be released at a later date.
