CHICAGO (March 27, 2015) – The U.S. Paralympic National Team bounced back from consecutive losses to defeat host-nation Portugal 5-3 behind a hat trick effort from U.S. captain Seth Jahn in its final match of the FOOTIE 7-Povoa 2015 tournament in Povoa de Varzim, Portugal.
Portugal struck quick and early as Tiago Ramos found the back of the net in the third minute. Adam Ballou however, did not let the U.S. stay behind for long, scoring the equalizer in the fourth minute. Ramos, who scored all three goals for Portugal, notched his second tally in the seventh minute and his third in the 11th, to give Portugal a 3-1 advantage midway through the first half.
Jahn made sure the U.S. would stay close, tallying his first goal of the match also in the 11th minute to keep Portugal within reach and head into the locker room with a 2-3 deficit.
In the second half, Jahn turned it on and scored back-to-back goals in the 60th and 61st minute to give the U.S. its first lead of the game. Rene Renteria added a fifth goal on the 64th that sealed the deal for the stars and stripes.
“I am delighted that we managed to finish the competition with a hard fought, but well-deserved victory against the host-nation Portugal,” said U.S. PNT head coach Stuart Sharp. “The competition as a whole has been excellent preparation ahead of the World Championships. There is still plenty of work to do, but we are certainly heading in the right direction.”
With the win, the USA finished the tournament in third place with six points, earning the bronze medal. Ukraine finished first and Argentina took home second.
“It's important that the players enjoy the fact that they are heading home with a medal,” continued Sharp. “But at the same time I will be looking for them to push on and aim to achieve more as time progresses. We have an excellent group of players and staff who I know will continue to work hard to do their nation proud.”
For the USA, the tournament served as preparation for the 2015 Cerebral Palsy Football World Championships, which will run from June 16-28 at St. George’s Park in Staffordshire, England.
