Opening Statement:

“Good afternoon everybody, now it’s time to speak in Spanish so I’ll switch… Para mi país y para la FMF hoy es un día muy importante. Es un día importante porque se cumplen varios objetivos. El más importante, que el fútbol permite construir proyectos, sueños y emociones. Con este acuerdo entre Canadá, EE.UU. y México que hoy firmaremos, estamos poniendo al fútbol en primer lugar. Estamos permitiéndole a una región que hasta el día de hoy casi somos medio billón de habitantes entre los tres países, y que seguramente seremos más de medio billón en nueve años, tener una fiesta.

“Este medio billón de hombres y mujeres que vienen de todas partes del mundo y viven en estos tres países, estarán felices de recibir al resto del mundo; ofrecerles una gran fiesta y volver a validar que el fútbol es emoción, que el fútbol es un sueño; que el fútbol puede construir cosas y que al final, de los 48 equipos seguramente uno será campeón, pero lo que verdaderamente será campeón en ese verano del 2026 será la tesis que el fútbol puede construir, que el fútbol puede unir y que el fútbol va a recibir en esta parte del mundo a todos los que quieran gozar de esta gran fiesta.

“Me congratulo de la coincidencia de estar aquí, pero estoy seguro que a cualquier mexicano le hubiera dado mucho gusto ser parte de este proyecto. Los esperamos en México como también en EE.UU. y en Canadá. Y un último punto, yo recuerdo, soy más viejito que ellos, yo recuerdo bien el mundial del 1970. Recuerdo bien como se construyó el estadio azteca. Y luego nos cayó 1986 y recuerdo bien ese mundial. Hoy el ofrecer la posibilidad a los mexicanos, a los americanos y a los canadienses de vivir en México un tercer mundial, es un gran honor. Mis hijos no vieron el mundial del ’70; mis hijos no vieron el mundial del ’86, pero seguramente verán el del 2026, y mis nietos. Y creo que eso es la bendición del futbol, poder hacer esa magia y podérsela ofrecer al mundo. Enhorabuena y muchas gracias.”

“Good afternoon everybody, now it’s time to speak in Spanish so I’ll switch… For my country and the Mexican Federation, today is a very important day. It’s an important day because today we achieve several objectives. The most important is that soccer allows us to embark on projects, to dream and to feel various emotions. With this agreement between Canada, the USA and Mexico that we will sign here today, we are putting soccer first and we are allowing this region, that up to today is encompassed by almost half a billion people between all three countries, and that surely will have more than that in nine years, to have a party.

“This half a billion mixture of men and women that come from all parts of the world and live in these three countries will be happy to welcome the rest of the world. To offer them a great celebration and to validate that soccer is emotion, that soccer is a dream and that soccer that can build things. At the end, one team out of all 48 will triumph, but who will truly be the champion during that summer in 2026 is the thesis that soccer is able to create. Soccer can bring people together and in this area of the world, it will welcome everyone who wishes to enjoy and be part of this great celebration.

“I am fortunate to be here today but I’m sure that any Mexican would be very happy to be part of this project. We wait for all of you in Mexico as well as the U.S. and Canada. And one last point; I remember, as I am a bit older than them (Sunil and Victor), the World Cup in 1970. I remember well when Estadio Azteca was built. And then we got the World Cup in 1986 and I also remember that event. Today, to be able to offer that possibility to all Mexicans, Americans and Canadians to experience a third World Cup in Mexico, it is a great honor.  My kids did not see the World Cup in 1970; they did not see it in 1986. But I’m sure they’ll be able to see it and experience it in 2026, and my grandchildren too. That’s the blessing that soccer provides; to be able to create this magic and offer it to the world. Congratulations, and thank you.”

On the support for the bid from President Trump and what hosting the tournament would mean in the current political climate:

“Bueno yo creo que como Sunil lo menciona, este no es un foro para hablar de política, es un foro para hablar de fútbol. Y lo que si estoy seguro es que seguiremos trabajando los tres países para construir muchas canchas de futbol, que el balón ruede, y que nuestras sociedades disfruten de los que significa el fútbol. Y que al final como lo mencioné segura habrá un ganador, pero eso es el ganador del futbol. Habrá ganado la región al haber invitado al mundo a gozar con notros lo que para muchos nos gusta mucho que es el fútbol. Creo que así se construye una bonita historia.”

“Well I think as Sunil mentioned, this is not a forum to speak about politics, it’s a forum to speak about soccer. What I’m sure of is, as three countries, we will keep working to build many soccer fields, keep the ball rolling, and that our communities enjoy the meaning of soccer. In the end, as I mentioned, there will surely be a winner, but that’s the winner in soccer. What will truly win is the region by having invited the world to celebrate with us what we truly enjoy, which is this game. I think that’s how we’ll create a beautiful story.”

On how the three federations arrived at the proposed distribution of games:

“Bueno, desde el primer día que platique con Sunil de este proyecto que en algún momento fue un sueño que fuimos construyendo, había que encontrar una forma en la que juntos, y Canadá sumado, pudiéramos ofrecer este proyecto. Al final, el número que esta hoy puesto, es un numero pero que en nuestro MIU faltan nueve años. Pero creo que con lo que hoy tenemos de acuerdo podremos ofrecerles a los mexicanos en México un buen mundial un gran mundial y a los mexicanos que están en EE.UU. tendrán los otros 60 partidos para poderlos disfrutar.”

“Well, since the first day that I spoke with Sunil about this plan that once was a dream that we were building, we had to find a way in which together with Canada, we could offer this plan. In the end, the number that was suggested today was a number, but our MOU still has nine years left. I think that with what we have agreed to today we could offer the Mexicans in Mexico a great World Cup. And then the Mexicans in the U.S. will have the other 60 games to enjoy.”

On the cities, stadiums and infrastructure of the three countries to host World Cup games:

“Nosotros tenemos los números en general y los tenemos claros. Las reglas tenemos que conocerlas por parte de FIFA y a partir de ahí construir una oferta de ciudades estadios para cumplir con el cuerdo de cargos. Creo que muy bien lo dijo Sunil tenemos en México y los tres países la infraestructura suficiente para poder acomodar 80 juegos y creo que en ese sentido la posibilidad de llevar la fiesta a mas ciudades debería de ser uno de los objetivos, pero está sujeto a las restricciones que FIFA ponga en el momento que nos haga llegar el cuaderno final que tenemos que suscribir los tres países y ofrecer la información correspondiente.”

“We have the numbers in general and they are clear. We still need to receive the guidelines from FIFA and from there build an offer of cities and stadiums that meet the needs that are agreed upon. I think Sunil said it best, in Mexico and in all three countries, we have sufficient infrastructure to accommodate all 80 games. I think in that sense the possibility to take the celebration to more cities should be one of the objectives, but that will be subject to the restrictions that FIFA place. In the end, we will receive the final draft that we all must agree upon and offer the corresponding information.”

On the timeline and road ahead for the federations if the bid is accepted by FIFA:

“Buen yo creo que como en 30 días, 45 días, conoceremos el libro y tendremos que empezar a trabajar alrededor de esa metodología y terminarla en tres a cinco meses, entregarla a FIFA y ver los detalles que se tenga que ajustar. A partir de que FIFA dé el visto bueno, que esperemos sea nuestra oferta, a partir de ahí tendremos que construir el camino y ver cómo los vamos a desahogar. Yo creo que nosotros tenemos la experiencia de que en los estadios en donde podremos poner los juegos que nos corresponden. Siempre hay un equipo que maneja ese estadio y hay un conocimiento y una sabiduría y una experiencia para poder desarrollar eso. Lo hicimos en el mundial del sub-17 y funciono muy bien. Lo haremos de nuevo. Y de aquí a nueve años tendremos seguramente nuevos estadios en México o los estadios actuales incrementaran su capacidad, sus comodidades, su tecnología y creo que es un camino que va de la mano.

“Lo que si estoy cierto es que desde hoy, pero especialmente el día que podamos anunciarle al mundo que tuvimos la fortuna de ser elegidos por FIFA para poder organizar el mundial del 2026, es como un impulso de energía, de recursos, de emociones y de compromisos que los 18 equipos de la Liga MX tendrán para mejorar su infraestructura y que seguramente todos no podrán tener o todas la ciudades no podrán tener un juego de los que tengamos que organizar pero indirectamente saldrán beneficiados por lo que significa este compromiso; lo que significa enfrentar y abrir las puertas al mundo y lo que significa, que es fundamentalmente, que es reivindicar y seguir creciendo y construyendo el futbol en nuestra región. Creo que eso tendrá un efecto directo e indirecto en todos los equipos y en todas las ciudades y en todos los estadios que hoy albergan el futbol.

“Y aprovecho para decirlo, no solo el efecto que vemos no solo va a ser beneficioso para Canadá, para EE.UU. o para México; yo creo que esta decisión de la región tendrá un impacto fundamental para Centro América y el Caribe. En diferentes magnitudes, pero definitivamente lo va a tener. Y en ese sentido, Víctor cuando se quita la cachucha de presidente de Canadá de la federación y asume la de presidente de CONCACAF estará doblemente satisfecho de poder ofrecer a la región, a CONCACAF un impulso tan importante como de que la región sea host del primer mundial de 48 equipos que como menciono Sunil, si nosotros estamos calificados por automático pues habrán 3.5 espacios para que países que nunca hayan podido alcanzar la ilusión de participar en un mundial seguramente habrá un competencia ardua en Centro América y el Caribe por alcanzar esos tres espacios y medio y CONCACAF tendrá una fiesta de 6 países y medio en un mundial en so región, en su casa, con su gente. Y creo que eso, directa o indirectamente beneficia al futbol y por eso estamos tan contentos los tres presidentes de no solamente por el orgullo nacional que podamos tener sino también por el compromiso regional que tenemos como dirigentes de la CONCACAF.”

“Well, I think that in 30 to 45 days we will see the book and we will have to begin working around that methodology and finish it in three to five months, turn it in to FIFA and see the details that we might need to adjust. From the moment FIFA gives the nod of approval, which we hope will be to our proposal, from then on we will build the road and see how to develop it. I think we have the experience in the stadiums where we could host games that are assigned to us. There are always teams that manage those stadiums and know how things run, have the knowledge and experience to build this out. We did it during the U-17 World Cup and we will do it again. And in nine years we surely will have new stadiums in Mexico or current stadiums that have increased their seating capacities, their amenities, their technology and I think this is something that goes hand in hand.

“What I am sure of is that starting today, but especially the day we can announce to the world that we were fortunate enough to be chosen by FIFA to host the 2026 World Cup, is that moment will be a jolt of energy, of resources, emotion and commitment that all 18 teams in Liga MX will receive to improve their infrastructure. And while not all of them or all cities will be able to host a game, they will all in fact be indirectly benefitted by what this commitment signifies. Opening the doors to the world will be fundamental and it will show the value of the game, the aim to keep on growing it and building it in our region. I believe that this will have a direct and indirect effect on every team and all cities and in every stadium that hosts soccer.

And I’ll take the time to mention that, this will not only benefit Canada, the U.S. or Mexico, but this regional decision will have a fundamental impact on Central America and the Caribbean. Maybe in different magnitudes but it will have it. And in that sense, when Victor takes off his hat of President of the Canadian federation and assumes his roles as CONCACAF president, I’m sure he’ll be twice as satisfied to be able to offer this region a push as valuable and important as being the host of the first World Cup with 48 teams. Like Sunil mentioned, if us three do get automatic bids into the tournament, then this means that there will be another three-and-a-half slots open for countries who dream to one day participate in a World Cup. This will foster strong competition between Central America and Caribbean countries that want to get those spots. That means CONCAACF will have a party with six-and-a-half countries in the World Cup; a party in its region, in its home, in its stadiums and with its people. And I think that, directly or indirectly, will benefit soccer. That is why we are so happy as presidents, not only because of our national pride, but also because of the commitment to our region that we have as leaders in CONCACAF.”
