On Friday, Portugal head coach Fernando Santos named a 24-player roster for his side’s upcoming friendlies against Saudi Arabia (Nov. 10) and the United States (Nov. 14).
Headlining the squad is the prolific attacker André Silva. The 21-year-old striker tallied nine goals in 10 matches during Portugal’s run to the top of Group B that clinched a berth for A Selecçao in the 2018 FIFA World Cup. The newly-minted AC Milan forward finished fourth overall in scoring during UEFA World Cup Qualification. Clubs with players from the top two teams in England (Manchester City), France (Monaco, Lyon), Spain (Barcelona, Valencia) and Portugal (Porto, Sporting) are also represented
The roster includes five players from Portugal’s UEFA Euro 2016 championship squad, including the roster’s senior-most player in defender Pepe (90 caps), as well as striker Éder (pictured above), midfielders João Mário and Danilo Pereira and goalkeeper Anthony Lopes.
Two players on the squad featured in the most recent meeting between the two nations at the 2014 FIFA World Cup. Goalkeeper Beto manned the net in the 2-2 draw, while Éder was a 16th minute substitute for Hélder Postiga during the memorable match in Manaus.
The Portuguese Football Federation has moved the kickoff time for the Nov. 14 friendly against the USA to 8:45 p.m. local time (3:45 p.m. ET). The match will serve as a benefit to those affected by the wildfires in Portugal this past summer that claimed 37 lives. In addition to being shown on three major networks in Portugal simultaneously, a telethon will be held to raise additional funds.
In the United States, the match can be seen live on FS1, UniMas and UDN. Caretaker U.S. Men’s National Team head coach Dave Sarachan will name his roster Tuesday, following the conclusion of the second legs on the M.L.S. Conference Semifinals.
