CHICAGO (Dec. 5, 2017) – U.S. Soccer has announced the five nominees for the 2017 U.S. Soccer Male Player of the Year award. This year’s field features forwards Jozy Altidore (the 2016 U.S. Soccer Player of the Year), Clint Dempsey and Jordan Morris, and midfielders Michael Bradley and Christian Pulisic.
Voting for the candidates closes on Tuesday, Dec. 12 at 11:59 p.m. ET. The winners will be announced throughout the month of December.
Altidore became the second-youngest player in MNT history to reach 100 caps and became the third MNT player to surpass the 40-goal mark. Against Mexico in June, Bradley scored one of the most memorable goals of his career to help the U.S. earn the 1-1 draw at Estadio Azteca. After an irregular heartbeat ended his season for club and country early in 2016, Dempsey returned to score five goals for the USA and up his total to 57 international goals, putting him one away from surpassing Landon Donovan and becoming the all-time leading scorer in MNT history.
A year of growth for Morris that saw him earn three Man of the Match honors was on display this summer during the Gold Cup when his game-winning tally against Jamaica in the final lifted the USA to its sixth confederation championship title. After being named the 2016 U.S. Soccer Young Male Player of the Year, Pulisic had a breakout year with the senior side, scoring a team-leading six goals while also cementing his importance with German Bundesliga powerhouse Borussia Dortmund.

Three of the nominees have won the award before. Dempsey has earned it three times, in 2007 and then back-to-back in 2011-12. Altidore has collected the honor twice in 2013 and 2016, while Bradley won it in 2015.
Landon Donovan holds the record for most Male Player of the Year awards with four honors (2003, 2004, 2009, 2010).
The U.S. Soccer Male Player of the Year has been awarded since 1984, when midfielder Rick Davis earned the inaugural honor.
