Why do you want to be on the Fan Council?
I am a vested member of my local soccer community, and a fan of the sport in general. I would love to see soccer continue to expand its fanbase, ensure it is the leading sport in the US with the least barrier to entry be it to play or attend, and the most inclusive. Soccer is the world's sport, and I would be honored to be a small part of it in hopes of helping make U.S. Soccer the best club on the planet.
How would you describe the role of the Fan Council within U.S. Soccer’s governance?
Fans are a vital representative and voice in sport, and the role of the Fan Council is to represent the perspective and concerns of fans as it pertains to voting for US Soccer leadership, assessing and approving some policies, and being a quality liaison between fan interests and US Soccer interests during discussions.
What unique perspective would you bring to the Fan Council?
I strive to bring a level and thoughtful perspective to the table. As a member of the LGBTQ+ community I have had some unique adversity in sport, and in life, that I believe would attribute to being an empathetic and thoughtful contributor and leader.
What would you like to achieve if elected to the Fan Council and how would you achieve it?
I would like to see fandom in Soccer increase over my term, greater opportunity, and growth in Women's soccer in the US, and have persons feel they were represented fairly and well during my term.
Kyle Bartow
Why do you want to be on the Fan Council?
First, I love US Soccer and want to be a part of it as much as possible. Secondly, as a college professor, I feel I am well suited to hear diverse opinions and apply logic to problem solving. I want to see fans involved with US Soccer and I feel like I could represent the supporters well.
How would you describe the role of the Fan Council within U.S. Soccer’s governance?
The fan council is meant to represent the voice of the fans, their wants and ideas. The fan council is supposed to give fans some input into the decision-making process of the team they support. It’s listening to everyone and representing the ideas of the fans to push US Soccer forward and use sound decision making to represent the fans’ best interests. The fan council is meant to bring fans, teams and administration closer together to move US Soccer into the future.
What unique perspective would you bring to the Fan Council?
As a college professor, I teach students from various backgrounds and see them through my classes on an equitable level. I am good at listening to problems and care enough to help students on a best path forward. I am fact driven in my everyday job and can process information and interpret it to proper conclusions very well. Mostly, I would like to be a part of the fan council for my son. I want the U.S. Soccer system to be a family bonding thing for my family and the families of all other fans. Building a fan experience that feels like family is something that all soccer teams should aim for, and especially national teams. As a fan council member I would aim to think nationally, bringing fans from all corners of the country together to make the fan groups feel more cohesive, and to have a stronger voice in the US Soccer setup.
What would you like to achieve if elected to the Fan Council and how would you achieve it?
More fan opportunities before US Soccer games would be one goal. More open practices, more virtual Q&A’s and when regulations begin to relax, maybe more meet and greets. My one opportunity to meet Us Soccer players after and open practice is one of my favorite memories. It would also be nice to have a national convention for US Soccer fans from the official fan group, American Outlaws and Barra76. Fans could meet other fans from around the country. It could be an opportunity to sell a lot of “convention exclusive” gear, an opportunity for team sponsors to do more business. Maybe you could do coach Q&As or New Jersey reveals, like they do at Comic Cons. My experience connecting different groups together and providing new and exciting opportunities for our students could lead to more interaction between Us Soccer and the community, could build new partnerships and provide outreach opportunities for US Soccer.

Why do you want to be on the Fan Council?
I would like to be on the Fan Council so that I can help elevate United States Soccer to a level of worldwide renown and to bring the joy of attending a match to fans around the country. I have been a huge fan of soccer for my entire life, and I would love the opportunity to promote and foster this love of the game within the country. I believe the growth of passion for soccer in this country has been exceptional over the last few years, but I believe that we can reach the levels of Europe or South America eventually. It is an exciting time to be a US Soccer fan and I am more than willing to offer my time and appreciation towards the growth of the sport.
How would you describe the role of the Fan Council within U.S. Soccer’s governance?
I would describe the role as a voice to fans in the proceedings of the US Soccer Federation. The Council not only provides the Federation with a finger on the pulse on the national fandom, it also provides the fans with an outlet to have their voices heard. The main goal here, in my opinion, is to increase the reach and the stature of the United States soccer community, hopefully elevating us to levels previously thought to be unreachable.
What unique perspective would you bring to the Fan Council?
The unique perspective that I bring to the Fan Council is that of a global soccer fan. I have been to over 30 countries and I have seen soccer matches in eight, so I have a good appreciation of the sport from a global perspective. I know what drives the passions of fans across the world, and I believe I can bring this knowledge to the Fan Council to help them expand their reach and meet their goals. I have met and talked with hundreds of soccer fans across the globe at a variety of different stadiums, from Australia to Columbia. I also offer the perspective of a lifelong United States Soccer fan and a former player of the sport.
What would you like to achieve if elected to the Fan Council and how would you achieve it?
If elected to the Fan Council, I would work to broaden the reach and esteem of United States soccer. I feel like we are on the cusp of emerging as global force in the sport, and I would love to be a part of getting us to that level of respect. I would like to use my marketing and communication background to help spread the message of US Soccer to the potential fans of the country, packing stadiums and getting everyone ready to show up in force with an amazing attitude. The future is bright for US soccer and it is truly exciting to see. Whether or not I am elected to this position, I look forward to promoting and taking part in future of our country's impact on this beautiful sport we all love.
Russel Buetow
Why do you want to be on the Fan Council?
Over the past 10 years I have become progressively more involved with Soccer. I began my journey coaching my son's AYSO U5 team. Eventually, I became an AYSO Regional Board Member, serving as the Director of Coaching for our region. Right now, I have just completed my Grassroots 9v9 and 11v11 courses and will work towards earning a D License in 2022. I also have been a Referee, first for AYSO, and now a USSF Grade 8 Referee. Both of my children play competitive club soccer. I have worked as a volunteer for their clubs. We also support USMNT & USWNT including attending games in Rio in 2016 and international friendlies in Southern California. We are very active with professional (and semi-professional) soccer in Southern California. We are regular attendees at LA Galaxy Games. And since 2016 we have been season ticket holders for USL Championship Club, Orange County Soccer Club. We even attended the USL Championship in Tampa Florida here OCSC won.
Over the past 20 years in my career I have served in a variety of volunteer roles in my industry and I have enjoyed the work and the ability to give back to communities in Southern California.
During my time in AYSO my focus was always to help democratize soccer for our players and families to help more people participate and develop in whichever system they chose to play in. It was also my desire to help more people grow their love for "the beautiful game".
So for me, my goal of being on the fan council is to get the opportunity to help continue to improve US Soccer in a way that raise the bar for everyone at every level and to help me become a ambassador for US Soccer in Orange County and Southern California. I will also work to be a representative to gather feedback from other supporters with whom I engage along with players and families in my large network her in OC to help them grow their love of USWNT, USMNT, the developmental teams, and professional, semi-professional, and competitive/recreational adult and youth soccer.
How would you describe the role of the Fan Council within U.S. Soccer’s governance?
I believe the role of the Fan Council should be to be a direct conduit for US Soccer to get meaningful feedback about the fan experience across the US. This focus needs to be diverse and include multiple levels. It needs to help US Soccer build the path forward to create the best possible experiences for fans. It also will serve as a way of understanding what fans want to see from the USWNT & USMNT in terms of competition, exhibitions, and training. Fan Council should also work outwardly to connect with key stakeholder organizations (such as supporter groups and other structured organizations with a vested interest in US Soccer and the fan experience. Success can be measured quantitatively and qualitatively in a number of ways. First, growing active engagement between fans and US Soccer in social media. Second, success can be measured by increasing live participation in events and activities from US Soccer. And finally, getting real anecdotal feedback from local fans is important too.
What unique perspective would you bring to the Fan Council?
I didn't play soccer growing up....not competitively, not recreationally, not even at recess in elementary school. I grew up playing many other sports and competed in high school in Football, and Swimming. I have been a fan of several other sports in my adulthood. I have been a Lakers Season ticketholder, a San Diego & LA Chargers season ticketholder and have even shared season tickets for the Los Angeles Dodgers. My love of soccer didn't come until much later in life compared to many soccer fans. But once it came, I have become singularly focused on Soccer. I no longer hold season tickets for any other sport except soccer. And the vast majority of my sports viewing has shifted from other professional sports to watching soccer almost exclusively. I even watch (on TV and in person) lower level matches when time permits. Recently I watched the USMNT U20 team play in the revelations cup by getting a trial subscription to FUBO TV to access TUDN (since it wasn't available on any of my existing platforms. I think my situation is one that is critical to the long term success of US Soccer. It can't just be that young players kind of drag their parents kicking and screaming to more US Soccer events. US Soccer has to work to convert these non-soccer parents into active participants and eventually into raving fans!
From a business perspective, I have spent my entire career in the enterprise technology industry and focused on the State & Local Government sector. I think my understanding of technology and my understanding of how local government works could be useful to the council.
What would you like to achieve if elected to the Fan Council and how would you achieve it?
My goal if elected to the Fan Council is to have a meaningful impact on the direction of US Soccer. I want to be able to create change in the short term that increases fan engagement and also help create an inclusive culture where accessibility to soccer continues to expand. I also want to be able to be in a position to get US Soccer the feedback it needs to improve the quality of soccer across the U.S. and help USMNT and USWNT continue to compete and win in the biggest events. And finally, I would like to see fan focused feedback impact the business operations of soccer in a way that creates a cohesive soccer experience rather than the current model that to the casual observer can seem a little disjointed. How do we make it easy for newcomers to become engaged? How do we get people to become passionate sooner? How do we make US Soccer the leading team based competitive sport in the U.S?
I have been fortunate enough to have a lot of great opportunities come my way in life. I see participation in this council as an opportunity to pay it forward to future participants in US Soccer.
Daniel Cerwinske
Why do you want to be on the Fan Council?
My love for the sport of soccer has spanned five decades as an avid player, passionate fan and successful promoter of the game. I have strong desire to support the growth of soccer and be a part of the Federation’s mission to make soccer, in all its forms, the preeminent sport in the United States.
How would you describe the role of the Fan Council within U.S. Soccer’s governance?
The Fan Council gives U.S. Soccer fans a voice in the Federation’s governance.
The two members who serve as fan representatives on the National Council will vote on U.S. Soccer governing authorities including:
The election of U.S. Soccer President
Approval of U.S. Soccer budgets
The adoption of amendments to the articles of incorporation and bylaws of U.S. Soccer
Affirming the policies approved by the Board of Directors for the past year
What unique perspective would you bring to the Fan Council?
I joined my first soccer team when I was four years old and am still playing almost 40 years later in two adult leagues. My first memory of watching soccer on TV was in 1989 when our Men’s National Team dramatically defeated Trinidad and Tobago to secure our place in the 1990 FIFA World Cup.
Four years later, I was glued to the TV and completely enthralled with the 1994 FIFA World Cup. My Dad was lucky enough to secure tickets to Germany vs. Belgium (Round of 16) which made that summer even more memorable and impactful for me. I have attended several and watched the majority of our National Team’s matches over the last 30 years.
In 1996, I was at the Tampa Bay Mutiny’s inaugural MLS match vs. New England Revolution and have since attended hundreds of MLS as well as a countless number of USL, CONCACAF and NCAA matches. Rarely does a day go by in my life when I do not touch or see a soccer ball. I am a proud, Louisville City FC season ticket holder and have been since the club's inaugural season.
Currently, I am the Director of Ticket Sales and Fan Retention at the University of Louisville Athletics Department with more than 15-years of marketing and sales experience in the sports industry.
Previously, I spent seven full seasons in the LA Galaxy front office as a Senior Account Executive promoting the club and MLS across Southern California and beyond. I even appeared in one official match with the LA Galaxy Reserves in 2008.
What would you like to achieve if elected to the Fan Council and how would you achieve it?
After developing a clear understanding of established goals, I would like to contribute the valuable insights from my perspective as a life-long soccer fan and sports industry professional to the Fan Council team and various decision-making processes.
I envision that the successful achievement of specific goals will be guided by recommendations and decisions that carefully consider the short and long-term impact on each US Soccer constituent, with a special eye on the hosting of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Scott Dalton
Why do you want to be on the Fan Council?
I'm a huge proponent of Soccer. Having grown up playing into the collegiate level I've always been a soccer fan, now as a season ticket holder for FC Cincinnati. As a child of the late 80's/90's soccer as it is today wasn't an option, so really being able to help shape the fan experience is important to me.
How would you describe the role of the Fan Council within U.S. Soccer’s governance?
To help build awareness and exposure at all levels of Soccer, across the country. From U6 up to MLS, building a program that highlights the benefits of sports/soccer in particular can have on a young adult and helping them become vocal advocates for the sport as well.
What unique perspective would you bring to the Fan Council?
I am marketer by trade, so the customer experience to me is vitally important. It's something I'm very passionate about and then can lead into the fan experience. Understand the pain points and solutioning for that to create the better journey a fan should be on.
What would you like to achieve if elected to the Fan Council and how would you achieve it?
Well we would all like to save the world, but I think it would be hard to determine what I'd like to achieve before knowing fully what the priorities of the Fan Council are. However, having recently gone to the USWNT friendly here in Cincinnati and then USMNT against Mexico here at TQL. I can tell you the experiences between the 2 were extremely different. In my opinion that shouldn't be the case, I know what wasn't apples to apples friend vs WC qualifier but, I'd like to see the fan experience comparable between the two.
Joshua Evans
Why do you want to be on the Fan Council?
I am passionate about the USWNT and USWNT as are my kids. I am committed to being a part of the growth of soccer in the US and seeing it grow and flourish. To be a small part of that would be an honor.
How would you describe the role of the Fan Council within U.S. Soccer’s governance?
Giving some level of fiduciary and strategic input and oversight. Being a collaborative member of a team focused on strengthening US soccer and its long-term growth.
What unique perspective would you bring to the Fan Council?
I have a doctorate in organizational leadership and learning from Vanderbilt University and am a servant leader and mediator/collaborator as CEO of a large nonprofit organization, my skills would benefit the overall organization and my passion for US Soccer would drive my engagement. It would be an honor to give back and be a member of something I care deeply about.
What would you like to achieve if elected to the Fan Council and how would you achieve it?
I first and foremost would simply want to make sure I am a contributing member of a team and that my contributions align with the needs of the organization, its members, and mission. My hope would be to drive stability, growth, and change where needed but only as a member of a team and within the framework of the Fan Council. Achieving this will take engagement, deep listening, connecting, and demonstrating care to the organization and all who give their time to support it.
Ryan Garber
Why do you want to be on the Fan Council?
I want to give back and contribute to not only the growth of the sport, but also the continued acceleration of the adoption of the game within the United States.
How would you describe the role of the Fan Council within U.S. Soccer’s governance?
Essential. As with any leadership or governance council, outside perspective, thought leadership and diversity of perspectives is necessary to transform and gradually but firmly establish the growth mindset necessary to evolve.
What unique perspective would you bring to the Fan Council?
Eighteen years of experience within sales, negotiation and deal making in the corporate sector. Applying these skills to understand complex issues and create simple, inclusive visions that can be executed upon.
What would you like to achieve if elected to the Fan Council and how would you achieve it?
Enable a feedback cycle that gives fans a voice, while also providing US Soccer true and transparent line-of-sight into the fans' thoughts, ideas and passions throughout the Country. This starts and ends with listening.
Jeffrey Gordon
Why do you want to be on the Fan Council?
I am willing to be a dedicated member of the Fan Council because I feel I would be a value-added member through my insights given my experience playing the game and now being involved in the next generation of players. It would be thrilling to know that I would have an impact on the direction of the federation going forward.
How would you describe the role of the Fan Council within U.S. Soccer’s governance?
The responsibility of the Fan Council is to give a voice to those who dedicate their time, attention and funds to the sport at all levels of competition. It is more than a sounding board but an integral part in how to grow the game in this country.
What unique perspective would you bring to the Fan Council?
As a former player, I understand how the game should be played and what resources are needed for today's (and tomorrow's) players to achieve their potential. As a father of a travel player, I have a unique viewpoint in what motivates and challenges today's athlete. As an avid fan of the game, I love to follow the latest sporting news, techniques and tactics to gain a better appreciation of the sport because there is always something new to learn beyond my E Level license.
What would you like to achieve if elected to the Fan Council and how would you achieve it?
A better path for parents to become more educated about the sport, primarily through more knowledge of the coaching classes available. Too often I hear uninformed shouts from the sidelines which, with a little education, could be better tailored as helpful and encouraging.
Andrew Hassiepen
Why do you want to be on the Fan Council?
My love for soccer started due to the soccer pedigree in the Peoria, IL area. My older brother led our high school to its first state championship in the 90’s. Due to my father’s expat assignment in Geneva, Switzerland my love of the game only increased. While attending the University of Illinois, I volunteered as a student manager for the women’s team and coached at the local club. I remember watching the 2002 World Cup and have since watched every men’s and women’s World Cup campaigns. I was fortunate enough to live in Portland and feel that rush of taking the tram to a Timber’s game. I still have a mini blue and green Kappa ball from my childhood signed by DaMarcus Beasley and other Fire teammates. I’ve experienced the lows as well as the highs and I want as many people to experience the world’s best game the way I do.
How would you describe the role of the Fan Council within U.S. Soccer’s governance?
The Fan Council helps ensure that US Soccer includes all stakeholders in its planning an decision making processes. Soccer is has always been a sport for the people around the world and US Soccer’s commitment to including all voices from the athlete to the fan shows the desire to make soccer the most popular sport in America. Having the voice of fans helps ensure soccer does not become “big business”. The Bundesliga has exhibited that including fans in the decision making process is a win win situation.
What unique perspective would you bring to the Fan Council?
Having played youth soccer in the US and Switzerland, having coached for 5 years, and having volunteered for a college program shows my passion for the game. Being an HR professional in the sports world, has given me insight to realize the policies, structure, and culture of an organization are of utmost importance.
What would you like to achieve if elected to the Fan Council and how would you achieve it?
To put it simply, to make soccer the most played, watched, attended and discussed sport in America. In order to do so, youth soccer needs to be more accessible and affordable. College soccer and developmental programs need to prepare players for a possible future outside of soccer. We need to maintain our dominance on the USWNT side. It is clear the rest of the world is catching up. And to continue the momentum on the USMNT side.
Derek Hawkins
Why do you want to be on the Fan Council?
I have been a fan of soccer since I was 7 years old and playing on a local team. I have been the head coach of my children's local soccer teams when they were young as well. I have followed US Soccer throughout my life and either watching on TV or watching live many US Soccer matches from the Men's and Women's national teams to the U18 Team. I follow the English Premier league, MSL, Bundesliga and other teams for which our US men's team members play for to keep up with our players and their development.
I want to be a part of this council to ensure that the US soccer fans are active in governance, development, and are always striving to improve the quality of soccer that the USA deserves and expects.
How would you describe the role of the Fan Council within U.S. Soccer’s governance?
The easy answer would be to say "The voice of the people"!
Sure that is true, but what more can this role be? To be a liaison between the fans and US Soccer to develop educational opportunities to players and coaches and development of strategies for the betterment of our athletes and coaches. To develop strategies to grow the sport of soccer in the US to higher fan participation that in turn would encourage more athletes to see that soccer is just as high paying of a sport in the US as other sports, which in turn should lead the US to possible winning more trophies on the international stage like the World Cup!
What unique perspective would you bring to the Fan Council?
I have been a fan of US soccer for a long time, for 44 years or so I have seen moments of greatness in our national teams from winning Gold Cups and Women's World Cups and various other tournaments. I have also watched the struggles of not qualifying for world cups or early exits from those tournaments as well. I know that it takes time and patience with determination, to affect change in our program and I think that has begun. I feel that my excellent communication, diplomacy, and professionalism would fit well into being a fan representative on the council and working with the council at large.
What would you like to achieve if elected to the Fan Council and how would you achieve it?
For the Men to win a World Cup, for the Women to keep winning World Cups and player development to have the best soccer players in the world. To work with the Council to encourage more corporate sponsorship and increase the fan base to have more money to flow into US Soccer to pay for all the development needed to become THE soccer nation that everyone would dream to play for and fight for.
Brian Hejka
Why do you want to be on the Fan Council?
I loved going to the 3 USA games this year I attended and would like to share the spark that I have with others to ensure that more and more people from all backgrounds enjoy our beautiful game.
How would you describe the role of the Fan Council within U.S. Soccer’s governance?
As a partner I would advocate for the fan experience for our beautiful game for matches at the highest level. I also feel it is important to emphasize the growth for our partners at the local level to continue the evolution for soccer in our country.
What unique perspective would you bring to the Fan Council?
As a Latinx person I would be able to speak to the continued inclusion of our diverse fan base to strengthen and solidify a broader perspective.
I believe we have a unique opportunity to tie the strings together of our game to make us a force especially with 2026 in the horizon to be the best host ever for the World Cup.
We would do ourselves a favor to start now to impress the world and show our amazing growth since ‘94.
What would you like to achieve if elected to the Fan Council and how would you achieve it?
I would like to work with our partners to increase community engagement at the local levels via watch parties, better app engagement with our fans and continued improvement for match days with our partner stadiums.
Jordan Janis
Why do you want to be on the Fan Council?
Honestly, I just think it would be a fun, unique and enriching life experience.
How would you describe the role of the Fan Council within U.S. Soccer’s governance?
Provide a perspective from someone that does not work within the organization/within the business of soccer when it comes to developing goals, policies or new ideas. I will be bringing viewpoints from myself and others that I will talk to further the development of soccer in our country.
What unique perspective would you bring to the Fan Council?
I am a passionate US Soccer fan who is raising a passionate US Soccer fan in my daughter. I will bring the perspective of how we can build US Soccer to instill this love of the game in the youth of this country.
What would you like to achieve if elected to the Fan Council and how would you achieve it?
Identify communities that would be integral to improving US soccer, but lack the engagement. Once these communities are identified- begin campaigns there…by the time 2026 rolls around more and more communities will have a vested interest in the beautiful game!
Liz Lafitte
Why do you want to be on the Fan Council?
I am a lifelong fan of US Soccer, particularly the USWNT. 2021 has been a hard year in women's soccer for numerous reason -- but top of mind is the abuse/harassment concerns effecting the NWSL and US Soccer. I would like to do more as both a fan and advocate to support our players and bring more awareness to all aspects of the game. This, of course, does not mean my love is only for women's game, but it is the side that I relate to the most and do feel women are underrepresented in most councils/boards.
How would you describe the role of the Fan Council within U.S. Soccer’s governance?
I would describe this as not only an advisory role to the fan experience but also an opportunity to collaborate strategically on bringing growth to the game and ensuring long term success at all levels.
What unique perspective would you bring to the Fan Council?
I work in the tech/social media, have a strong background in industrial engineering with a MBA, am female, LGBTQ, and a soccer fanatic. Combined, this not only brings diversity, but enables me to consider all aspects of potential decisions and not look at things with a one sided view.
What would you like to achieve if elected to the Fan Council and how would you achieve it?
I would like to see more pricing strategies, other revenue generating ideas (granted, this needs brainstorming), so that younger, less fortunate players can attend matches. For example, the tickets to the recent USMNT match against Mexico were over $100 -- we're losing a key audience and talent pool with those prices. I'd also encourage more match time interaction -- similar to what Peyton and Eli are don't in the NFL -- can we have a live stream of different fans (+ players) discussing the matches?
Drew Margulis
Why do you want to be on the Fan Council?
It's been incredible to watch the growth of soccer in America over the past two decades, from the expansion of MLS, to a true focus on academy and youth development, to increased exposure and television accessibility, and a focus on supporter culture to create hotbed markets. As the game has grown, US Soccer has also become a unifier of sorts. In an incredibly diverse nation that is growing increasingly divided, US Soccer has been a place of respite from the division. I've shared the stands, tailgates, restaurants, and bars with others who I normally may have had nothing in common with and likely disagree on my things with. But US Soccer brought us together and opened up doors of understanding, and for that, I want to represent the best of what US Soccer can be for this country.
How would you describe the role of the Fan Council within U.S. Soccer’s governance?
The Fan Council of US Soccer is an incredibly important body to share diverse perspectives of supporters and fans of the game with board members and athletes who may likely not know or understand the effects of many of their decisions, both positive and negative. The Fan Council should provide a true pulse of the game and the organization and help eliminate any ignorance that may arise between the parties.
What unique perspective would you bring to the Fan Council?
From sitting on the school board and representing the student body to leading projects that require balancing the competing interests of a developer, program office, and customer with the needs of the DOD, I have always been focused on problem solving through collaboration. Collaboration between competing interests and diverse perspectives requires understanding issues, causes, and effects, and as an avid reader, I've often pored into topics to fully understand issues. Many of my best friends stand on the opposite side of many issues as I do; we understand that we all want the same thing but have different ideas of how to get there. That mindset is important for US Soccer; growing the game (and winning a World Cup) should be everyone's goal, and our different perspectives when working together can help us get there.
What would you like to achieve if elected to the Fan Council and how would you achieve it?
Continuing to grow the game of soccer in America requires access, youth development, and a culture. Access is important to the diehard fans, who want to easily find their game on TV, and also to the casual fans, who may not know a game is taking place but would watch if it were on at the sports bar or if they saw it while channel surfing. Access means that those who want to play, coach, or officiate, have clear and inexpensive pathways to do so. Access also allows the great progress the US has made over the past decade or two in youth academies and development to continue to improve, since more young athletes will have a chance to showcase their talents (or simply their desire to be coached to improve). Finally, I want to see a true US Soccer culture prevalent. A US Soccer game is inherently fun to attend; how do we extend that experience outside the stadium gates to generate a culture of interest in US Soccer every day and not just every four years? A Fan Council is an important start to answering that question.
John McHale
Why do you want to be on the Fan Council?
I am 64. I started playing when I was 8. I was coached by Europeans and traveled regionally through high school. I played D-3 soccer in college and continued to play in adult leagues until age 50 when joint replacements took over. I have followed the progress of the game throughout. I recently attended the US v. Mexico game in Cincinnati and hope to attend in St. Paul. I am a retired attorney and have served on many boards both locally and State-wide in Iowa. I have reached leadership positions in my occupation as an attorney and on various boards. I believe I have the experience, time and interest to contribute to the future of U.S. Soccer.
How would you describe the role of the Fan Council within U.S. Soccer’s governance?
Offering legitimate input to U.S. Soccer regarding perception of U.S. Soccer's governance. Going beyond budgetary and political influences.
What unique perspective would you bring to the Fan Council?
A lifetime of involvement starting as a boy and progressing as a club player, high school and college player with regional and national recognition and continuing as an adult player, youth coach and a great fan of the game. My club coach was heavily involved on a national basis and was instrumental in bringing the McGuire youth cup to Omaha.
What would you like to achieve if elected to the Fan Council and how would you achieve it?
I would like to represent the views of the fan who loves the sport but feels their interests are not being considered. Through networking with local and state officials and participating in regional and national meetings, points of view regarding the future direction of the sport would be presented. The hope would be to use the opportunity to strengthen the current fan base and to develop its increase.
Mike Ory
Why do you want to be on the Fan Council?
As a male soccer fan, who supports all soccer, but Women first - I'd like to represent that small group; men who are women's soccer fans. I feel it's important for fans of all perspectives to be represented. Would love to have a voice for men who support women's soccer.
How would you describe the role of the Fan Council within U.S. Soccer’s governance?
Learn and review US Soccer and other Federation's polices and help review bylaws and policies with a voice from what is best for fans.

I'm male season ticket holder for the NWSL (GothamFC) and attend as many USWNT games as possible. I do watch men's soccer (both USMNT and Red Bull) occasionally but my perspective is FIRST for the Women. I appreciate their interaction with fans, their style of play, and the accessibility of the games and players.
What would you like to achieve if elected to the Fan Council and how would you achieve it?
I'd like to help grow the game in the US in any and all ways; This can be achieved by expanding the accessibility of the players to the fans; various in-person (and virtual) meetups, discussions, etc. I would push to help organize town-hall type meetings where fans can ask questions to coaches, executives and players.

To be more involved with direction of US Soccer, to push American soccer forward with an experienced sports business voice.

What unique perspective would you bring to the Fan Council?
I am a sports industry professional, currently in ticketing (experienced with Ticketmaster) with over 10 years working in pro sports for multiple organizations and have helped with major events (All Star Game, Finals, large music festivals). I've also attended over 50 USMNT/WNT matches over the last decade plus, including 9 away matches, as well as two World Cups (2014 WC Brazil, 2014 U20 WWC Canada). I know how the sports business side works, and I see how other countries treat their national team matches, so I have a keen sense of where opportunities exist and where we are failing ourselves.
What would you like to achieve if elected to the Fan Council and how would you achieve it?
Make US Soccer more accessible for fans, to grow the passion for the game and the national teams, so US Soccer is embraced by Americans like we see elsewhere in the world. Some countries basically shut down and declare national holidays when the national team is playing, I want the United States to get closer to that level of support.
Tom Selby
Why do you want to be on the Fan Council?
To contribute to the US Soccer community. As a fan of both the WNT and, later, the MNT I am eager to grow the fan base and build support for US Soccer nationwide. Since the 99ers I have been an avid WNT fan, having attended two World Cup championships. More recently I have been captivated by this young and dynamic MNT. Attending the WCQ against Mexico in Cincinnati was a sports fan highlight of all time.

The fan council contributes to governance of US Soccer and helps build the US Soccer community and fan base.
What unique perspective would you bring to the Fan Council?
I want to do more to support the diverse fan base of US Soccer. Our fan base is incredibly diverse. Just as the players have become more diverse the fan base has as well. There is a huge — and largely untapped — opportunity to build support for the US national teams among the diverse populations of our great nation.
What would you like to achieve if elected to the Fan Council and how would you achieve it?
See Spanish speaking US fans incorporated completely into the fabric of US Soccer. I would recognize opportunities to integrate these fans into the full experience of US Soccer. Recently I attended the USMNT WCQ in Austin and was shocked to see no Spanish language t-shirts despite the fact that the crowd was ~30% Mexican American. Huge marketing and community bullying gaff. We can and must do better!

I fell in love with soccer a long time ago. Since 1996 I've been a season ticket holder and supporter of the Columbus Crew SC (first team in the MLS!). As a US Navy Gulf War veteran, I have a deep appreciation for the players & coaches who represent our Country and am an avid supporter of both USMNT and USWMNT. I've attended MLS, USL and US Soccer/CONCACAF matches across the United States, as well as Premier League matches at Stamford Bridge. In fact, most of our trips are now centered around a soccer match!

I would consistently work to strengthen the relationship between fans and US Soccer. I love the game - and if it weren't for the people involved at ALL levels, there wouldn't be a game to enjoy. I see a distinct evolution from an exceptional and engaging fan experience to the development of our soccer playing youth, and that trajectory really excites me.

My main objective, if elected (and what an honor it would be), is to promote and expand on the current grassroots movement in an effort to make soccer/football (our beautiful game) accessible to everyone so that we can find and develop the best players regardless of their socioeconomic status or demographics. What unique perspective would you bring to the Fan Council?
I am a long time soccer player, fan, referee and coach. I have experienced the game in various roles playing every level from coed indoor to semi-professional indoor/outdoor. I coached a competitive club team for 10 years. As a fan I have attended live matches in 4 different countries so I have a global perspective of the fan experience at matches.
What would you like to achieve if elected to the Fan Council and how would you achieve it?
I would like to enhance the game day experience leading up to kick off. As someone who recently attended both matches in Ohio there is definitely an opportunity to do so. Doing this would take a concerted effort and a committee who was specifically focused on pre-game experience. World Cup Qualifiers are special and a lot of people attend matches for the first time so I think we could do a better job of maximizing that first impression of what a game day experience could/should be.
