U-17s Fall to Ecuador 2-1 in Copa Mexico de Naciones Semifinals

MEXICO CITY (Aug. 8, 2014) – The U.S. Under-17 Men’s National Team lost for the first time in the Copa Mexico de Naciones, dropping its semifinal matchup against Ecuador 2-1. With the loss, the U.S. plays Brazil in the third-place game on Sunday, Aug. 10.

After battling through a scoreless first half, the U.S. finally conceded a goal in the 59th minute as Ecuador took a 1-0 lead on Washington Corozo’s tally. Just seven minutes later, Jhoner Montezume converted a penalty kick to extend Ecuador’s lead to 2-0 after an Ecuador forward was taken down in the box.

The U.S. comeback attempt fell short, as Alex Zendejas put in a left-footed strike from the edge of the box in stoppage time but the U.S. failed to net an equalizer.
