the meaning of ADAPT𝘢𝘯𝘥THRIVE

The ADAPTandTHRIVE program is a first-of-its-kind combination of soccer-based initiatives (currently six initiatives are part of the ADAPTandThrive Program) which aim to impact the disability community.

The innovative multipronged approach hits on youth empowerment, leadership, awareness raising, and opportunity creation.  These creative elements set the program apart and position it as a trailblazer in promoting inclusivity within the soccer community.

When people hear the word adapt, they often think of a person with a disability, but in the context of U.S. Soccer’s Extended National Teams Department, the word "adapt" is meant for everyone. It's for people with and without disabilities. It’s about National Associations, partners, organizations, and society, in general, taking the opportunity to think differently, with inclusive mindsets, thereby creating opportunities for all to experience and "thrive" because of it.

This initiative creates an opportunity for players to showcase their skills, build friendships, and break down barriers, fostering a sense of unity and shared experiences.  This event features the sport’s elite U.S. National Teams and various U.S. Soccer member programs providing opportunities for adaptive athletes at all levels. The Invitational creates a platform of education and awareness for the athletes and organizations leading the way in growing the sport for people with disabilities.

ADAPT𝘢𝘯𝘥THRIVE Leadership Program

The ADAPTandThrive Leadership Course empowers individuals to become advocates for inclusion and change within their communities. By providing training in leadership skills, diversity awareness, and inclusive practices, this program equips participants with the tools to drive positive transformations in their respective spheres of influence. The Leadership Course mentors individuals to be catalysts for change and actively deliver inclusive programs within their soccer community. This course will help provide a runway to ensure we have access to an inclusive workforce and programming for part of our legacy for 2025, 2026, 2027, and 2028.

The Young Persons Working Group recognizes the importance of youth voices in shaping the future of soccer. This program brings together young individuals with and without disabilities to provide insights, perspectives, and innovative ideas that can guide the development of inclusive initiatives. The group serves as a platform for young leaders who have been selected by members of the U.S. Soccer Disability Committee to contribute to decision-making processes, ensuring that the voices of the next generation are heard and valued.

coaching education

The Coach Education initiatives have two main focuses.

  1. Using U.S. Soccer's Learning Platform to equip coaches with the knowledge and skills to foster inclusive environments. It encourages coaches to embrace innovative approaches and fosters a culture of inclusivity within the coaching community, therefore contributing to the growth of opportunity within disability soccer in the U.S.
  2. Providing bespoke coach education opportunities for coaches with disabilities to gain education and certification on the formal U.S. coach education pathway.
