Colombia Edges U.S. in Penalty Kicks after Dramatic 2-2 Draw in Gold Cup 2000 Quarterfinal in Miami
MIAMI (Saturday, February 19, 2000) - A goal and an assist from forward Brian McBride were not enough to carry the U.S. Men's National Team past Colombia, as the Americans lost in a penalty kick shootout (2-1) in the CONCACAF Gold Cup 2000 Quarterfinal today at the Orange Bowl in Miami, Fla.
Feb. 19, 2000
Despite two stops by U.S. goalkeeper Brad Friedel on four attempts, the Americans fell in the penalty kick shootout after converting only one of their own chances in five attempts.
With the elimination, the U.S. failed to advance to the semi-finals for the first time in team history, having finished third place or better in the four previous tournaments. After winning the inaugural Gold Cup in 1991, the U.S. was runner-up in both 1993 and '98 and finished third in 1996.
"It's disappointing, obviously, to lose on penalty kicks," said U.S. Head Coach Bruce Arena, whose team is now 3-0-2 in 2000 (today's result goes on the record as a draw). "Today we lost two leads. We should be able to protect a lead with 10 minutes left."
Colombia's second tying goal came in the 82nd minute when forward Gerardo Bedoya settled a ball with his chest and volleyed a wicked 25-yard shot that snuck in the upper corner of the near post past a leaping Friedel.
The goal that gave the U.S. a 2-1 lead came in an unlikely fashion, as the ball never hit the ground until it fell from the back of the opposing net. The unique succession started when Friedel blasted a goal kick almost to the opposite penalty area, where McBride headed it toward goal and an onrushing Chris Armas volleyed the ball inside the left post in the 51st minute.
Team USA broke things open in the 20th minute when McBride rose high above two Colombian defenders to knock a header past Calero after a perfectly placed, high floating cross from midfielder Cobi Jones into the center of the penalty area. The assist gave Jones at least one point in each of the five U.S. games this year.
Colombia struck back in the 24th minute when midfielders Hector Hurtado and Faustino Asprilla beat the U.S. offside trap and raced in on goal with just Friedel to beat. After receiving the through pass, Hurtado dribbled into the box, drew Friedel out and patiently slipped a square pass to Asprilla, who was running even and knocked it inside the nearpost.
The American's record against the solid South American squad dropped to 2-8-2, with the last win being an important 2-1 upset in World Cup USA '94 at the Rose Bowl.
Next up for the U.S. is a friendly versus Tunisia on March 12 at Legion Field in Birmingham, Ala. Kickoff for the game, which will be televised live on ESPN, is set for 2:30 p.m. ET.
In the other quarterfinal played in Miami today, Peru defeated Honduras 5-3 to advance and face Colombia on Wednesday (Feb. 23) at 8 p.m. (PT) at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego, Calif.
