Red Tops Blue in Second Development Academy Select Game at 2010 Winter Showcase

With the U.S. U-17 Men’s National Team on an off day from the Nike International Friendlies, Select Teams made up of players born in 1994 and 1995 were vying for the U.S. coaches’ attention.

PHOENIX (Dec. 4, 2010) -- With the U.S. U-17 Men’s National Team on an off day from the Nike International Friendlies, Select Teams made up of players born in 1994 and 1995 were vying for the U.S. coaches’ attention.

Two teams of 18 players each played an attractive brand of soccer in front of more than 300 college and national team scouts. After a scoreless first half of back-and-forth action, the Red team scored the game’s first goal in the 51st minute. Jack McBeam (Los Angeles Galaxy) got behind the Blue defense, touched it around the goalkeeper and slotted it into the net.

The Blue team deservedly leveled the score just three minutes later. Mike Gamble (Baltimore Bays Chelsea) ran onto the ball and battled through the back line before slipping the ball into the side netting.

Nick Tobias (St. Louis Scott Gallagher Metro) scored the game-winner for the Red team in the 73rd minute. He ran onto a through ball, took one touch around the final defender and a second touch on goal to make the final score 2-1.

Every player participating in this afternoon’s game is age-eligible to compete in the 2011 CONCACAF U-17 Championship and the 2011 FIFA U-17 World Cup.
