U.S. Men's National Team to Donate Autographed 'Shirts Off Their Back' to Benefit Disabled American Veterans
The U.S. MNT Players Will Donate Game-Worn Jerseys against France on Veterans Day
Nov. 11, 2011
CHICAGO (Nov. 11, 2011) – In honor of the U.S. Men’s National Team playing France on Veterans Day, the players will autograph and donate their game-worn jerseys for an online auction to benefit the Disabled American Veterans organization.
U.S. head coach Jurgen Klinsmann has selected 21 players to the roster for the match against France today at the Stade de France in Paris. Following the match, each jersey will be washed and then signed by the player. Information on how fans can participate in the online auction for the jerseys will be made available early next week.
“We are honored to have the opportunity to help assist disabled veterans,” said U.S. captain Carlos Bocanegra. “They have made a great sacrifice in the course of defending our country, and we are grateful for their service. They certainly deserve our support.”
Proceeds raised through the auction will be given to Disabled American Veterans (DAV), a non-profit organization that represents the interests of America’s disabled veterans, and their families and survivors. The 1.2 million-member DAV provides free benefits, counseling and representation for those seeking benefits and services from the Department of Veterans Affairs and other federal and state agencies.
“The U.S. Men’s National Team’s game jersey auction will mean a great deal to the men and women who have served and sacrificed for our country,” said National Commander Donald L. Samuels. “The team’s generosity will help us continue providing our free services to veterans of all eras, including those returning from the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.”
In honor of Veterans Day, U.S. Soccer also wrote a letter of thanks to veterans.
The match against France kicks off today at 3 p.m. ET, and the match will be broadcast live on ESPN2, ESPN3, Univision and Univision.com. Fans can also follow along on ussoccer.com’s MatchTracker and on Twitter @ussoccer.
