SUNRISE, Fla. (Feb. 3, 2011) – The U.S. Under-17 Women’s National Team came from a goal down to take a 2-1 lead, but then gave up a late equalizer in a 2-2 draw with the German U-18 Women’s National Team.
In an 80-minute match that finished a week-long training camp featuring both the U.S. U-17 and U-18 Women’s National Team, the USA fell behind 30 minutes into the game.
The U.S. U-17s, which defeated the German U-17s 3-1 on Jan. 31, once again fell victim to Fabienne Dongus, who scored her country’s lone goal in the previously mentioned loss.
German forward Selina Hunerfauth countered down the left wing after a change of possession, dribbled into the left corner of the penalty area, side-stepped a U.S. defender into the center and laid a short pass to Dongus. The German forward first-timed her shot from 10 yards into the right side of the net.
The U.S. tied the game in the 42nd minute as Elizabeth Boon pushed the ball down the left wing all the way to the end line and crossed on the ground to Andi Sullivan who finished from eight yards low into the right corner.
The young Americans took the lead in the 57th minute as Lauren Kaskie drilled a curving shot off a corner kick from the right side which caught German goalkeeper Meike Kemper off guard and flew into the top left corner.
The USA looked to have the game won before a German corner kick with less than three minutes remaining. Dongus took the kick from the left side and drilled a service which dropped into a scramble of players. Germany captain Sarha Romert won the ball near the left side of the goal and struck a shot through the legs of U.S. goalkeeper Cassy Miller to tie the match.
The U.S. U-17s are at the start of a cycle with the goal of qualifying for the 2012 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.
