GAINESVILLE, Fla. (March 17, 2010) – Midfielder Kristie Mewis, who plays collegiately at Boston College and hails from Hanson, Mass., scored both goals for the U.S. U-20 Women’s National Team in a 2-2 tie with the Boston Breakers of WPS during a training camp in Gainesville, Fla.
Mewis, the 2009 U.S. Soccer Young Female Athlete of the Year, opened the scoring in the 18th minute when Sade Ayinde played a ball to right back Rachel Quon who was making an overlapping run down the right flank. Quon sprinted past the left back while taking a touch to the end line and played the ball across the six-yard box. The center back covering the near post went to clear, but mishit the ball to right to Mewis, who collected as she turned on goal and shot low to the near post from six yards out. The goalkeeper dove to her right, but the driven shot skipped under her.
Brazilian Fabiana scored the equalizer in the 32nd minute after U.S. goalkeeper Adriana Franch mishandled a cross from the right wing. Fabiana was first to the loose ball and finished low into the right corner from six yards out.
The Breakers took the lead just two minutes later after U.S. legend Kristine Lilly, who was recently called into her first U.S. Women’s National Team camp since 2008, scored off a corner kick. The ball was dummied off the corner and Lilly struck her shot into the upper right corner.
Mewis equalized in the 57th minute off a set play as Kendall Johnson sent an in-swinger from the right wing into the penalty are with her left foot. Mewis, making a run to the far post, struck a side-footed volley from just outside the goal box into the upper left corner of the net.
