CARSON, Calif. (Aug. 26, 2007) -- U.S. Women’s National Team forward Abby Wambach sustained no serious damage to her toe following a foot-to-foot tackle with a Finland player early in the USA’s 4-0 victory yesterday in the final match before the 2007 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Wambach was forced to leave the game in the 27th minute and had a precautionary X-ray following the match. Wambach heads into the Women’s World Cup having scored 77 goals in 96 career matches, including a team-leading 11 in 2007.

“Abby’s tough enough that some minor pain is not going to stop her,” said U.S. head coach Greg Ryan. “She’s just an awfully tough person. In the CONCACAF Qualifying Tournament, she was on a bad ankle that entire Gold Cup, and she scored the goals to get us into the World Cup, so Abby will be fine.”

“I jammed my toe going into the tackle and it caused some pain, so we got an x-ray,” said Wambach. “It’s sore today, but thankfully, we have a good medical staff that will get me ready to play and compete in this World Cup. I know I’ll be ready for the first game because I’m not sure anything could keep me off the field.”

The U.S. team departs for Shanghai tomorrow to set up base camp prior to its Sept. 11 Women’s World Cup opener against North Korea at Chengdu Sports Center Stadium in Chengdu. Kickoff is 5 p.m. local / 5 a.m. ET and the match will be broadcast live on ESPN2 with a re-air later in the day.
