First Round Ends With One Rescheduled Match;
Four USL First Division and Four USL Second Division Teams

CHICAGO (June 15, 2006) – U.S. Soccer announced the third round pairings for the 2006 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup today. The third round will take place on July 12, with eight new entrants—four teams from the United Soccer Leagues First Division and four from Major League Soccer—facing the winners of the June 28 second round games.

The first round of the 2006 U.S. Open Cup was played on Wednesday, June 14, with one game being rescheduled for Thursday, June 15, due to field conditions.

Two games kicked off the first round at 7:30 p.m. ET, as the Wilmington Hammerheads hosted the Virginia Submariners and the Michigan Bucks hosted the Pittsburgh Riverhounds. A third 7:30 p.m. ET match between the Cape Cod Crusaders and the Carolina Dynamo was rescheduled for Thursday, June 15, at 7:30 p.m. ET, still at Macpherson Stadium in Browns Summit, N.C.

Wilmington defeated the Submariners, 3-1, and Michigan defeated Pittsburgh, 2-0, to clinch a spot in the next round. Also advancing to the second round were Milford International, Des Moines Menace and the Arizona Sahuaros. Milford beat Chicago Lightning, 1-0, while Des Moines bested the Dallas Mustang Legends, 3-2. The surprise of the round came in the Arizona Sahuaros match against the BYU Cougars, as the USASA Sahuaros handily defeated the PDL Cougars by a 5-1 score.

The other two teams to advance were Roma FC and the Sonoma County Sol, who both drew their respective matches in regular time and overtime, and went to penalty kicks in order to earn their spot in the second round. Roma FC defeated Laredo Heat, 4-2, in penalty kicks, after ending regulation tied 1-1 and each team scoring in overtime to make the final score 2-2. Sonoma County Sol also advanced on penalty kicks, beating out the Ogden Outlaws of the PDL, 6-5, in penalty kicks after drawing, 1-1, in regulation. Sonoma, of the USASA, was left out of the second round of the 2005 tournament after falling, 5-6, in penalty kicks to the Salinas Valley Samba.

The original 42-team field is now down to 33 clubs. All 12 MLS teams, all eight of the U.S.-based USL First Division teams, six of the nine USL Second Division teams and eight teams from the PDL had places in the 2006 tournament. Additionally, regional qualifying narrowed down the field of USASA teams to eight.

Geographical pairings and host proposals received from each club determined match-ups, as they will through the quarterfinals of the tournament. Possible pairings for the fourth round will be announced after the completion of the second round.

At stake in the tournament is $180,000 in prize money broken down as follows: $100,000 to the champion, $50,000 to the runner up and $10,000 to the team which advances deepest in the tournament from each of the Division II, Division III and amateur levels.

The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, the U.S. Soccer Federation’s National Championship, is an annual competition open to all amateur and professional soccer teams affiliated with U.S. Soccer. It is the oldest annual team tournament in U.S. sports history and among the oldest soccer tournaments of its type in the world. In 1999, the competition was renamed to honor long-time soccer pioneer Lamar Hunt.
