Second Round Ends With One USASA and Two PDL Squads Advancing;
Remaining Eight MLS Teams Join in Fourth Round

CHICAGO (June 29, 2006) – U.S. Soccer announced the fourth round pairings for the 2006 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup today. The fourth round will take place on August 2, with eight new entrants—all from Major League Soccer—entering the tournament.

The second round of the U.S. Open Cup was played on Wednesday, June 28, with USASA team Roma FC surprising USL First Division squad Miami FC, 1-0.

“My team is still on cloud-nine,” said Roma FC head coach Michael Schell, whose team found a way to neutralize Miami FC’s superstar, Brazilian goal-scoring legend Romario, and keep the visiting team scoreless after converting a penalty kick early in the match. The penalty kick was awarded after a Miami FC player handled the ball in the penalty box.

"He must have thought that the ball was heading for the goal," said Schell, "which it was, and he wanted to stop a goal."

Roma FC will next face Chivas USA at 7:30 p.m. PT on Wednesday, July 12, at the Harder Stadium (UC Santa Barbara) in Santa Barbara, Calif.

Also surprising the opposition were the Michigan Bucks of the PDL, who defeated the USL Second Division’s Cincinnati Kings, 2-1. The Bucks will face MLS squad Columbus Crew at 7:30 p.m. ET on Wednesday, July 12, at Stoney Creek High School in Rochester Hills, Mich.

In other U.S. Open Cup second round action, the Charleston Battery (USL-1) defeated the Sonoma County Sol (USASA), 1-0, and will face the Portland Timbers (USL-1) in the third round. The Wilmington Hammerheads (USL-2) advanced to the third round with a 3-1 win against the Charlotte Eagles (USL-2). After surprising the BYU Cougars in the first round, the Arizona Sahuaros (USASA) were unable to pull off another upset, falling 1-0 against the Virginia Beach Mariners (USL-1), who will go on to face Real Salt Lake.

The second round wrapped up with the Des Moines Menace (PDL) winning, 1-0, against the Minnesota Thunder (USL-1), while the Carolina Dynamo defeated the Richmond Kickers, 1-0, and New Hampshire Phantoms won, 4-1, against Milford International.

The original 42-team field is now down to 24 clubs. All 12 MLS teams, all eight of the U.S.-based USL First Division teams, six of the nine USL Second Division teams and eight teams from the PDL had places in the 2006 tournament. Additionally, regional qualifying narrowed down the field of USASA teams to eight.

Geographical pairings and host proposals received from each club determined match-ups, as they will through the quarterfinals of the tournament. Possible pairings for the quarterfinal round will be announced after the completion of the third round.

At stake in the tournament is $180,000 in prize money broken down as follows: $100,000 to the champion, $50,000 to the runner up and $10,000 to the team which advances deepest in the tournament from each of the Division II, Division III and amateur levels.

The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, the U.S. Soccer Federation’s National Championship, is an annual competition open to all amateur and professional soccer teams affiliated with U.S. Soccer. It is the oldest annual team tournament in U.S. sports history and among the oldest soccer tournaments of its type in the world. In 1999, the competition was renamed to honor long-time soccer pioneer Lamar Hunt.
