CHICAGO (February 26, 2007) - U.S. Soccer's National Board of Directors has unanimously approved the effort to bring the 2018 FIFA World Cup to the United States. The decision was made on Friday (February 23) on the first day of U.S. Soccer's 2007 Annual General Meeting being held in Los Angeles. U.S. Soccer's membership also unanimously endorsed the bid at the organization's National Council meeting on Saturday.

In other news at Saturday’s National Council meeting, U.S. Soccer’s membership approved the addition of Carlos Cordeiro to the Board of Directors as the first of three Independent Directors. (The three "independent director" positions were created at last year's AGM, when the organization's Board of Directors was reduced from 40 to 15.)

Cordeiro has more than 20 years of experience providing strategic and financial advice to corporations, financial institutions and governments around the world. He has previously been a Partner and Managing Director of Goldman Sachs Group Inc., and was the senior banker to the World Bank. He has also served as Advisory Director of The Goldman Sachs Group Inc., and as Vice Chairman of Goldman Sachs (Asia). Jim Hamilton also was named to U.S. Soccer's Board of Directors as a representative of the Adult Council.

U.S. Soccer’s Board of Directors also received a preliminary application for sanctioning from a Division 1 Professional Women's League to begin play in 2008.

Additionally, the U.S. Soccer Foundation saw Richard Groff voted to the organization’s Board of Directors, while Linda Hamilton and Kevin Payne were re-elected to the same body. Chris Christoffersen, Peter Masotto and Darl Rose were voted as Life Members by the National Council.
