U.S. Under-20 Women Defeat Norway 2-1 in Chile

LA SERENA, Chile (Feb. 13, 2008) -  The U.S. Under-20 Women’s National Team won it second straight game at the Four Nations Tournament in La Serena, Chile, defeating Norway, 2-1, on goals from Keelin Winters and Teresa Noyola. The U-20s are preparing for the CONCACAF U-17 Women’s Qualifying Tournament which will send three teams to the 2008 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup to be held this fall in Chile. Dates and venues for the qualifying tournament have yet to be announced.

The USA out-shot Norway 14-5 for the match and got its first goal in the 11th minute, originating from a free kick from 40 yards out that was sent into the penalty area by Casey Nogueira. Norway cleared the ball back to midfielder Keelin Winters who took a left-footed shot from about 30 yards out that hit the crossbar and bounced into the net.

Nogueira also played a part in what turned out to be the winning goal that came just before halftime, flicking the ball on to midfielder Teresa Noyola who cut past a defender, took a dribble and then slotted her shot from 10 yards into the lower right corner. It was Noyola’s second goal in as many games.

Norway pulled a goal back in the 76th minute, but never really threatened to get an equalizer.

"I am very pleased with six points after two games,” said U.S. head coach Tony DiCicco, who is coaching the team in his first tournament at the helm of the U-20s. “For most of the first half we played inspired soccer, but a two-goal lead is never secure internationally and especially when playing against Norway. The win gives us the chance to play host Chile for the championship in front of a full house and on national TV, which should be great for our players. I was especially pleased with the play of Keelin Winters. She was the difference today for the USA.”

Chile defeated England, 1-0, in the day’s other match. The USA needs a win or a tie against Chile in its last match of the tournament on Friday, Feb. 15, to win the Four Nations Tournament. The win helped the USA sweep a pair of youth matches against Norway today, as the U.S. U-23s defeated the Norway U-23s, 2-0, in Spain.
