Coaches Meetings and Workshops The U.S. Soccer Development Academy will periodically hold Best Practice/Technical Workshops designed to provide Academy coaches insight into National Team Coaching Philosophies and Practices.
Academy Coaches Attend USMNT v. Brazil Preparation and Match – Chicago, IL (Sept 7-9) U.S. Soccer hosted three local Academy Coaches from the Sockers FC and the Chicago Fire at the U.S. Men’s National Team’s training session in preparation to the team’s international friendly against Brazil. After practice, the coaches met with Bob Bradley for one hour to listen to his preparations for the match and discuss player development in the United States.
On Sept. 9, two Academy Coaches participated in a tour of Soldier Field prior to the U.S. Men’s game against Brazil. The coaches were shown a behind-the-scenes view of U.S. Soccer Game Day Operations, including a tour of the U.S. team’s locker room, press box and an on-field view of the pre-game warm-ups.
U.S. Soccer will continue to provide opportunities for Academy Coaches to interact with U.S. National Team Staff and U.S. Soccer Operational Staff at our various events around the country.
Academy Coaches Technical Workshop – Chicago, IL (Sept. 12-13) U.S. Soccer conducted a two-day Technical Workshop from Sept. 12-13 in Chicago. In addition to orientation sessions that focused on a variety of logistical areas and philosophical foundations to the Academy approach, the attendees received expert technical analysis from U.S. Men’s National Team head coach Bob Bradley, U.S. U-20 head coach Thomas Rongen, U-17 head coach John Hackworth and U.S. Soccer Director of Coaching Bob Jenkins. Bradley spent one hour providing a video breakdown of the USA-Brazil game, while Rongen and Hackworth each selected matches from the recent Youth World Cups to illustrate coaching tactics and evaluation techniques. Jenkins reviewed the USA’s performance in the 2007 Pan American Games, focusing on roster selection and match preparation.
Also presenting at the Workshop were two of the world’s leading scholars in the Expert Performance Movement. Dr. Anders Ericsson of Florida State University presented an overview of his distinguished research on ‘deliberate practice”, a method of learning how to develop expertise. Dr. Paul Ward, his colleague at FSU, presented on the application of this theory to the sport of soccer. These principles form the philosophical foundation of the ‘less games, more training,’ approach that the Development Academy has implemented in the program.
The next Coaches Workshop will be held during the Winter Showcase on Feb. 16-18 in Dallas, TX.
