  1991 FIFA U-17 World Championship - Italy

Teams: 16
Dates: August 16-31

USA
Ranking in Group: 1st
Overall Record: 3-0-1
Final Ranking: 5th

Before the fourth edition, the tournament was changed from a U-16 event to the FIFA U-17 World Championship, and the change seemed to have reinvigorated the U.S. team as they recorded three victories in group play and finished five places higher than they did in the previous tournament. The Americans finished at the top of a tough group by shutting out both Italy and Argentina, defeating each country 1-0, and scoring three goals against Chinese PR to claim the top spot in the group. The U.S. advanced to the next round only to lose in a heartbreaking fashion to Qatar, 5-4 on penalties, having been tied 1-1 after regulation play.
